S tarting on Thursday, February 18, 2016, a brand new smartphone costing only four dollars will be on sale by a company called Ringing Bells Pvt. Limited — established only last year and is already self-proclaimed as “one of the fastest growing smartphone companies in India” — which declares that you should “experience the freedom” with its new Freedom 251 smartphone for a price of 251 Indian rupees…
…which is actually roughly equivalent to $3.60 as of today.
It operates on the Android Lollipop 5.1 system software platform; and it comes loaded with software application programs; a four-inch display; a 3.2 megapixel AF rear camera and a 0.3 megapixel front camera; a 1.3 gigahertz quadcore processor; one gigabyte of random access memory; eight gigabytes of internal disk space; a 1450 mAh battery; and an SD card support which is expandable up to 32 gigabytes.
I do like that last option of expandable disk space — a capability with which no Apple iPhone currently is equipped.
The Freedom 251 smartphone even comes with a warranty of one year commencing from the date of purchase — specifically, a period of 12 months for the host unit; six months for the battery and charger; and three months for earphone.
With a few cosmetic differences, it looks similar to an Apple iPhone.
Summary
The vision of the Freedom 251 smartphone is to “Empower citizens, even in the remotest rural and semi-urban centres of India, with the latest in digital technology at incredible affordable prices and cascade knowledge, news and current issues so that all experience the confidence of inclusive growth and equal opportunity – In short, innovative solutions for a Brighter tomorrow”; while its mission is “To provide futuristic technology products of the highest quality and best service at the lowest cost of ownership.”
How well this smartphone will work remains a mystery to the general public for now; and how its introduction will affect the products of competing companies is still unknown at this time.
