Additional Waivers Issued by Airlines Due to Two Winter Storms: January 2025 Travel Alert

Many existing travel waivers have been extended as well.

Consider ensuring that you have alternate travel plans ready to be implemented because of winter weather significantly affecting the eastern United States and some portions of southern Canada, as additional waivers have been issued by airlines due to two winter storms January 2025 since this last travel alert.

The following statement is currently posted at the official Internet web site of the National Weather Service of the United States:

Dangerous Cold Weather for Most of the Country; Rare Winter Storm for the South; Fire Weather Concerns for Southern California

Arctic air will filter south and east through early this week. As this cold air moves across the South, a rare winter storm is forecast to develop from Texas, Gulf Coast States into the Southeast through early this week. Several new daily record low temperatures are expected, including new record-low maximum temperatures. For Southern California, fire weather concerns increase this week.

The map of the United States from the National Weather Service currently indicates winter storm warnings, winter storm watches, winter weather advisories, small craft watches, and gale warnings from Indiana and Michigan — as well as southeastern Mississippi, southwestern Alabama, and the western panhandle of Florida — all the way to eastern Maine. Extreme cold warnings, extreme cold watches, and cold weather advisories have also been issued from eastern central Idaho south to most of New Mexico as arctic air settles in on two-thirds of the eastern United States as far south as the greater metropolitan area of Tampa Bay in Florida and much of the northern Gulf of Mexico.

The aforementioned loop shows that snowfall will be likely to occur through Wednesday, January 22, 2025 from northern Idaho to as far south as northern Texas and extreme northern Georgia all the way to New Brunswick in Canada. Significant amounts of rain are likely from southern Florida all the way to eastern Maine prior to the arrival of the arctic air. People in western New York, northwestern Pennsylvania, northeastern Ohio, and western Michigan are expected to experience as much as twelve inches of lake effect snow.

As much as 15 inches of snow could accumulate from central West Virginia all the way to northern New Brunswick in Canada. Expect travel conditions to be substantially difficult; and expect outages of electrical power. Fortunately, the cities of New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Hartford are just outside of this area; but as much as four inches of snow are not out of the question for these cities.

Portions of the state of North Dakota can expect bitterly cold temperatures of as low as 50 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. The temperatures are expected to be colder than 20 degrees Fahrenheit as far south as northern Mexico and the western panhandle of Florida.

In a rare move, the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States will occur indoors on the coldest Inauguration Day since 1985, as the low temperature tomorrow, Monday, January 20, 2025 is predicted to be only eight degrees Fahrenheit — but the high temperature could reach a balmy 25 degrees Fahrenheit, which will feel like twelve degrees Fahrenheit with winds of 14 miles per hour.

If you want to escape to warmer weather in January, try Anchorage in Alaska: the high temperatures will range between 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 37 degrees Fahrenheit this coming week, with low temperatures not expected to dip below 28 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bundle up, as most of the United States will be under a deep freeze for at least the next couple of days.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to, from, or within the eastern United States over the next couple of days or so, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this winter weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

I am scheduled to travel to New York tomorrow afternoon, Monday, January 20, 2025; so I will likely be affected by this latest winter weather. Up to four inches of snow could be on the ground upon my arrival. The temperature is expected to dip to as low as eleven degrees Fahrenheit while I am there.
