The sky was somewhat clear and the humidity was fairly low as the airplane ascended, which revealed an aerial view of Belgrade in Serbia moments after departure from Belgrade Nikolai Tesla Airport when I flew as a passenger aboard an Avions de Transport Régional ATR 72-500 airplane to Tirana that was operated by Air Serbia.

At the center of the photograph is the Most na Adi — which is known in English as Ada Bridge — and it is one of several bridges that cross the Sava River. The oval island in the middle of the Sava River is Ada Međica. Behind the bridges is the central part of the city of Belgrade.

Trivia time: Belgrade is both the capital city of Serbia and is also the largest city in that country. Its name in Serbian is Beograd, which literally translates into English as “white city”. The city is named for its fortress, which was built on a white ridge that has been of great strategic importance throughout history and has earned the city the moniker of “white fortress”.
