After my excellent experience at Coneflower Creamery in Omaha, I found another viable ice cream contender: Rose Rock Microcreamery in Tulsa in Oklahoma.
Another Viable Ice Cream Contender: Rose Rock Microcreamery in Tulsa in Oklahoma
This place was chosen simply on a whim and not on the apparently strong reputation that it has among the locals in Tulsa for great ice cream. No customers were inside; so I perused the menu on the wall to choose my flavors — but by the time I sat down to enjoy my ice cream, a long line of customers formed inside just before the place was ready to close for the evening.
Rose Rock Microcreamery is the brainchild of founder Jason Decker, who decided to leave the humdrum corporate life of e-mail messages and spreadsheets to open the first micro creamery in the state of Oklahoma.
As I was trying to figure out which flavor I wanted, I decided that I wanted my ice cream in a waffle cone bowl. I tasted Madagascar Vanilla out of curiosity; but after that sample, I knew what I wanted:
- Blue Moon
- Midnight Chocolate
I sat down at a small table and started sampling my ice cream. The flavors were boldly intense and real. Blue Moon comprised of blueberry, raspberry, and lemon flavors that created a light blue color that seemed artificial in appearance — but no artificial ingredients are included in any of the flavors of ice cream that are offered at Rose Rock Microcreamery. While I did enjoy the overall flavor of fruit in Blue Moon, I was missing the tartness of the lemon; and I would have preferred actual bits of blueberry and raspberry somehow swirled in the ice cream to give each flavor its own identity while simultaneously melding together with the other flavors. The Midnight Chocolate welcomed my taste buds with a deep rich flavor that was neither cloyingly sweet nor bitter; and the texture was velvety smooth.
This was an amazing cup of ice cream. Each bit tasted fresh, refreshing, natural, and full of flavors that were not timid by any stretch of the imagination. This is what ice cream should be all about and not some tepid milky milquetoast pale confection.
I also sampled the following flavors:
- Salted Caramel — As with the other flavors, this flavor is not false advertising. If you like a strong caramel flavor with more than just a hint of salt, this flavor is for you.
- Vietnamese Coffee — Forget iced coffee. Go next level with this flavor.
Final Boarding Call
Yes, I do seem to be on some sort of an ice cream kick lately.
I did not really do much research in finding dessert that evening after dinner. I knew nothing about Rose Rock Microcreamery. I even parked the rental car I had near there overnight and did not even realize it at first. When I found out about Rose Rock Microcreamery, it just sounded like a decent place to have dessert within walking distance of the hotel property at which I was staying.
I highly recommend Rose Rock Microcreamery, as it was much, much more than a decent place to have ice cream. The service was excellent as well — but be prepared to wait in line, which should give you enough time to decide on which flavors of ice cream to order. The ice cream was well worth the wait.
