Answers to Past Articles — Part 14: Hilton, Hertz, Knishes, and Highway Signs

In past articles in which your participation was not only requested but also helpful and humorous, I did not give the answers to questions which I have posed to you; so this article is the fourteenth of a series to do just that — along with links to the aforementioned articles…

Answers to Past Articles — Part 14: Hilton, Hertz, Knishes, and Highway Signs

…and the links are embedded in the titles of each section as well as within the sections themselves; so please click on the links in each section to take you to the original article — and this edition is entirely comprised of photographs which were contributed by readers of The Gate.

The Favorite Answer will usually be the correct answer by a reader of The Gate — along with a Favorite Comment from the same article which I found to be funny or informative.

When my contact at Hilton informed me of the latest promotion through which you can earn 10,000 bonus Hilton Honors points as an incentive for you to try WorkSpaces by Hilton for the first time if you need a change of scenery from the current 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic, I immediately clicked on the link to its official Internet web site and found that the headline for the promotion was worded — with the emphasis by me — “Earn 10,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points the first time your try Workspaces by Hilton.”

The errors have since been corrected after I reported them to my contact at Hilton, who responded to me:

“Goodness, thank you for flagging the typos. I’ve shared with my marketing team to correct on the web site. While obviously my team isn’t thrilled about the mistake, I understand it is public info so you could post… it certainly made me giggle.”

As always, I appreciate the good nature in which Hilton handles the errors — and we all got a much-needed laugh out of this one.

Favorite answer by Thomas Potter: “The error is in the lead sentence..‘The firs time YOUR try Workspaces’ It should read, ‘:The first time YOU try Workspaces’”

Favorite comment by derek: “Many things are bizarre or wrong in the photo and ad. The biggest bizarre thing is that the setting is a poor workspace. Such a small desk and a throne for the TV, jutting above the desk surface. It looks like the view from the bed but the ad never mentions a bed so it could have been removed from these work rooms.

“A small error is that there are 10,000 Hilton Honors points for your first paid visit to ‘Workspaces by Hilton’ but it should be ‘WorkSpaces by Hilton’.

“The TV remote is also missing or not seen. The refrigerator seems odd. The table top is resting on it when it usually is separate from the refrigerator.”

As we keep with the theme of travel companies committing errors: while I was working on an article which highlighted a deal which was offered from Hertz but has since expired — the deal was not all that good anyway for a variety of reasons; so I never wrote an article on it — I decided to start the process of booking a reservation for a car to rent for a total duration of four days, to pick it up from the location at LaGuardia Airport in New York and drop it off at the location at Tampa International Airport.

How in the world does a base rate of $29.99 for four days translate into a grand total of $96.14, which includes taxes and fees?!? That is some weird mathematics going on there.

The only thing I can think is that even though I was logged out of my membership account, some promotion code must have still remained for the reservation — but in the past, that promotion code was shown in the summary of payment.

Perhaps a “bug” or some other technological anomaly had occurred which needs to be fixed?

Favorite answer by NB_ga: “Um?!
“$119.96 + $26.96 + $7.20 + $2.00 = $96.14 !!!
“Super Special Hidden $59.98 discount?”

Favorite comment by Thomas Potter: “Is the tax rate in New York really 22 %?
“And what exactly is a Concession recovery surcharge?”

Yonah knish

To exist as a business in the city of New York for greater than 110 years, you have to offer an exceptional product for sale while weathering decades of “storms” and other impediments — both expected and unforeseen — to your business.

By selling different varieties of knishes, Yonah Schimmel is a knishery which did all of that and more — except get the spelling of its name correct on its main sign, which looks like it has been around itself for decades.

If you do not know what is a knish, it is a dumpling of dough which is stuffed with a filling — such as potato, spinach, meat, or buckwheat groats — and is then either round and baked; or square and fried.

This video shows how knishes are made.

Favorite answer by Josh: “‘Shimmel’ is spelled ‘Schimmel’ in the window signs.”

Favorite comment by Chris@Oak: “There should be three dots (…) after SHIMMEL; not two dots.”

For some reason, this highway sign on Interstate 575 in Georgia immediately caught my eye — simply because the letter s in the sign is upside down.

This was a difficult one for you to guess. I did not expect anyone to answer it correctly — but I did expect some creative answers; and you certainly did not disappoint!

Favorite answer by C & S Morris: “The 9 is an upside 6… not a normal 9..”

Favorite comment by Paul Gabriel: “Here is something that might interest you from wiki travel. There are 10 places in the United States that have Woodstock in them!
“Woodstock (Connecticut), Woodstock (Georgia), Woodstock (Illinois),
Woodstock (Maine), Woodstock (Minnesota), Woodstock (New Hampshire), Woodstock (Ohio), Woodstock (Vermont),
Woodstock (New York), Woodstock (Virginia).”

Tennessee Williams was born in Mississippi?

Thomas Lanier Williams III was the actual name given to Tennessee Williams, who was a famous playwright — and he purportedly adopted the name Tennessee because his father was from that state.

I checked to see if Ernest Jennings Ford — who was more familiarly known as Tennessee Ernie Ford — was born in Mississippi as well; but he was actually born in Bristol, which is in the eastern part of Tennessee.

As no one commented on this particular article, I obviously have no favorite answer nor a favorite comment. Oh, well…
