Answers to Past Articles — Part 21: Reader Edition

In past articles in which your participation was not only requested but also helpful and humorous, I did not give the answers to questions which I have posed to you; so this article is the twenty-first of a series to do just that — along with links to the aforementioned articles…

Answers to Past Articles — Part 21: Reader Edition

…and the links are embedded in the titles of each section as well as within the sections themselves; so please click on the links in each section to take you to the original article — and this edition is entirely comprised of photographs which were contributed by readers of The Gate.

The Favorite Answer will usually be the correct answer by a reader of The Gate — along with a Favorite Comment from the same article which I found to be funny or informative.

The photograph shown above was taken by a reader of The Gate — who wishes to remain anonymous — recently while taking a walk in a small town during a late afternoon on a beautiful sunny day and noticed a cut in the curb; and half of it leads into a wall.

Favorite answer by derek: “The wall was built in front of most of the curb cut (driveway). In addition, one of the downspouts (gutter) of the building on the left is detached and lying/laying on the ground. Since it’s likely a church, I wonder if it is a religion that believes in the laying of hands to fix the gutter?”

Favorite comment by Joe: “The chain link fence fabric goes way too high above the top rail”

A reader of The Gate — who wishes to remain anonymous — was recently at the door of a washroom at a restaurant in Dutchess County in upstate New York where she was dining. The sign on the door had the word DOES printed on it — which, in this context, meant ladies and not the verb in the present tense does.

Favorite answer by cr: “‘Does’ is the women’s restroom in hunting country (north/midwest). ‘Bucks’ is for males.

“Similarly, in coastal US the doors read :‘Gulls’ and ‘Buoys’.

“Yes, I’m that old.”
Favorite comment by Thomas Potter: “I’m assuming that the other washroom door has a sign that reads ‘Does Not’”

NB_ga — who is a reader of The Gate — saw that one of the windows of a local fast food dining establishment had the words vine ripe salads; and while cucumbers do grow on vines, not all of the usual elements of a salad grow on vines. Lettuce is one of many examples of salad elements which do not grow on vines and ripen on them.

Favorite answer by Sharonda W: “Salads don’t come on a vine.”

Favorite comment by Dianne: “For many, this ‘fast food joint’, is too healthy!! I’ll find their location and revel in it!! Thank You! !!”

Morocco is not a part of Europe; and that is acknowledged in the map — but other errors are included. For example, Vilnius — which is the capital city of Lithuania — is misspelled as Vilinius on the map.

Favorite answer by Stephan: “Morocco is not part of Europe”

Favorite comment by Thomas Potter: “Surely the GDP of the United Kingdom is not as great as the size depicted on the map, especially WHERE it is located, including Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Indianapolis,. I am also wondering if some product are not included, such as farming.

“On a side note, I am amused of the placement of Spain and France on the map, ie, the Louisiana Purchase, and the predominately Latino minority of the South West.”

A reader of The Gate — who wishes to remain anonymous — photographed a curious scene in Alcoa, which is the home of the international airport which serves the greater Knoxville metropolitan area in Tennessee; and despite from which angle it was viewed, it was still puzzling.

The explanation is that an automated teller machine of a bank used to be there; and that one parking spot was for anyone who wanted to use it. Without the automated teller machine, the parking space looks strange sitting there by itself.

Favorite answer by derek: “What is wrong is that there is a tree that has been mostly cut down but not completely and not taken away.

“What is seemingly odd is the oval driveway and a parking space but there is a logical explanation for this configuration. It is a former bank ATM branch where customers would get their money from the drive through ATM then circle around. The one parking space was for an employee to park if servicing the machines.

“I know this because I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express!”
Favorite comment by DaninMCI: “I’m just trying to get to Taco Bell for goodness sake”
