Are You Avoiding Travel to Georgia Because of the Abortion Law?

The entertainment industry is in the forefront of a growing number of entities which intend on banning official travel to Georgia and refusing to do business in that state because of the recent passage of a law by the Georgia General Assembly known as the Living Infants Fairness and Equality — or LIFE — Act to become effective as of Wednesday, January 1, 2020. Originally known as the “heartbeat” bill, the new law will ban abortion the very moment a fetal heartbeat can be detected — which can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy.

Are You Avoiding Travel to Georgia Because of the Abortion Law?

Signed by Brian Kemp — who is the current governor of the state of Georgia — doctors and advocates of reproductive rights claim that the law is basically as close to a total ban on the procedure as possible without actually calling it one, because it generally prohibits abortion before many women actually even know that they are pregnant.

The law also includes a penalty of up to ten years in prison for those who perform abortions.

Despite being the fourth state in 2019 alone to adopt such a measure, Georgia has been receiving more attention than the other states — primarily because it is one of the top five states in the United States in terms of motion picture, music, television, feature film, and other forms of entertainment production.

That fact has not been lost on actors and actresses in the entertainment industry — especially those who are associated with Hollywood. Alyssa Milano — who is an actress — has called for a “sex strike”, which has become viral on social media.

“Our reproductive rights are being erased”, according to what Alyssa Milano posted on Twitter. “Until women have legal control over our own bodies we just cannot risk pregnancy. JOIN ME by not having sex until we get bodily autonomy back. I’m calling for a . Pass it on.”

Meanwhile, the state of Rhode Island is already attempting to woo business away from the state of Georgia.

Remember the passage of a law by the North Carolina General Assembly back in April of 2016 known as the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act, which was to ban local governments in the state from instituting protective measures against anti-discrimination based on sexual orientation; and require transgender people in public schools, universities and government buildings to use washrooms which match the gender on their birth certificates?

Mike Coulson remembers when Netflix “refused to film in North Carolina over their anti-trans bathroom bill. We need you to do the same in Georgia until they repeal their degrading and dangerous abortion ban!”

Summary

I am based in the state of Georgia; but as I work part time as an actor, I believe that a boycott on the entertainment industry working in Georgia will hurt fellow actors and smaller studios and production companies the most. Besides, the larger companies in the entertainment industry are enjoying significant tax breaks when filming on location within the state of Georgia. Money talks.

As for banning travel to the state of Georgia, I am not really sure that will have much of an impact either.

Regardless of how I feel about this or any other law, I am not thrilled about outside entities which attempt to dictate what should and should not occur within a state in which they are not based. I remember during the most recent gubernatorial elections in the state of Georgia how powerful interests in Hollywood diligently tried to affect the results. I think they have enough to worry about pertaining to fixing the state of California before they try to influence elections and legislation in other states.

Finally, I have a modest request for members of both the pro-life and pro-choice movements: when a woman becomes pregnant, the train has already left the station. Why not instead pool your resources and team up to figure out ways to prevent unwanted pregnancies from happening in the first place, which would largely avoid this whole abortion debate that does little more than waste time and money?

  1. “the very moment a fetal heartbeat can be detected”, in other words when they are considered alive. Thank G-d there are still states with morals.

  2. An entertainment protest against Georgia would be significant. Hasn’t Georgia really opened itself up for entertainment related projects in the last decade?

  3. Liberal outrage and unfounded moral authority never ends. I’ll boycott scientifically illiterate hollywood stars that jet around the world to preach about how everyone else needs to reduce their carbon emissions, I will boycott companies like Lyft, Apple, and Google that push their politics on me, but I will not boycott states because their democratically elected representatives pass laws against butchering fetuses within minutes of being born.

It’s disgusting that smug elitists think it’s morally repugnant to not allow such a barbaric practice, especially in this day and age when there is so much information available, day after pills available, and plenty of couples wanting to adopt a baby. There is simply no excuse.

  4. I’m truly sorry if this does affect you. Perhaps if government would stop trying to legislate morality, it could instead pursue constructive avenues of endeavor, and things like this would become non issues.

    1. Government “legislates morality” all the time! Laws against, let’s see…murder/manslaughter; theft; assault; prostitution; lying (fraud, perjury, etc); discrimination against [fill in the blank] in hiring, providing services, or sales; alcohol production or consumption (in total, under a certain age, etc.); animal cruelty; display of obscenity; public intoxication; public nudity; pollution; killing endangered species; “unfair” labor practices; etc; etc.

And that’s because government is made up of, and represents, human beings. And human beings have morals. Those morals may vary among individuals and cultures – e.g., cannibalism has not always been taboo in some cultures, but we’re not robots.

      1. Ah, so that makes not only telling an adult woman what she can do with her body ok but throwing her in prison for doing it ok as well? Hmm, maybe we should stop trying to tell women what to do and let them decide for themselves. If you want to save lives, get rid of guns, then I’ll believe that you’re not spouting hypocrisy.

        1. I’m a woman, and the day I learned about pregnancy, my body doesn’t belong to me, It belong to US: my baby and me. If you are a man, don’t get into this argument, you never fully understand that (sorry to all Men with all do respect) I kinda understand pro-abortion women, I used to be one of them. But I despise a pro-abortion man. It’s easy to have an abortion, but very hard to realise what you’ve done at the End. If you are a moral, kind man, please, at least, do not have an opinion. But do not support a woman, who is about to make a terrible mistake!

  5. I’m pro-choice, but I will not be boycotting Georgia. Given that I’ve been to China a few times, refusing to go to Georgia because I disagree with one particular aspect of their politics would be inconsistent at best.

  6. Killing a heartbeat is sin if it exists in any form. Proud to be resident of state of Georgia that politicians care for the life and for the people. Hollywood can go and do what they know the best.

      1. It doesn’t apply to animals. One of the reasons G-d created animals was so that we could eat them.

  7. I am going to fly into Georgia even more now. It is not as much of the issue itself, rather my disgust for Hollywood idiots.

  8. As you noted, the boycott will only hurt their own, generally liberal minded individuals who work in that industry.

And, Christian, government does need to sometimes legislate “morality,” as you say, when people on your side of the aisle want to permit abortion up until the time of birth.

I don’t know whether or not the detection of a fetal heartbeat is the correct “point of no return,” but it certainly is not up until the time of birth.

  9. Liberals need to pass laws that affect conservatives profoundly without having any kind of effect on their own lives.

For example meat should be banned unless you kill the animal yourself. Or all kids should have to watch animals being slaughtered before they are permitted to eat meat. Or gun permits should come with a mandatory class that encourages (or at least doesn’t discourage) suicide. Or mandatory class of philosophy in school where people give all the reasons why they think jesus was gay and christian’s are assholes.

  10. Standing up for unborn babies is a good thing and i am not christian or anything. It is just right vs wrong. I don’t believe taking away life is a choice and now that they advocate and openly call for abortion even after birth, it is time to speak out!

  11. I have never been to Georgia but I am more inclined to go now because of the liberal boycott than before. Firstly as a christian conservative I don’t support abortion personally but don’t believe the government should interfere in a person’s right to do anything to their own body and with their own body as they please (drugs, free speech, free association, alcohol, suicide, not wearing a seat belt, eating fatty food, abortion, etc). The liberals protesting the law are doing so for the wrong reasons. They are not protesting because it is an infringement on personal liberty and fundamental concepts of freedom but are protesting because they think abortion is a good thing and abortionists should be praised.

For all the outrage on the left I would be more willing to travel to Georgia and more willing to say positive things about Georgia on surveys, on social media and to anyone who asks just to provide a counter to their ridiculousness.

  12. Life is not that sacred, look at all the idiots running the country these days. If a women doesn’t feel the need to add to this cesspool called America she has that right.

    1. If you reside in CA or NY, maybe, but here in Texas it’s “The Shining City on a Hill” 🙂

  13. Georgia population 9.6 million. The STATE is putting this into effect.

Atlanta is half a million-ish. The effects of boycott would largely impact Atlanta, which is a visible target but not the real problem

    1. The whole sports world too. Anything tainted with politics where it doesn’t belong is dead to me.

  14. @Christian The GA law is not about morality it’s Life/Death case. The society should protect the weakest among us, it comes to babies (born or unborn) as well as very sick (euthanasia).

  15. I live near Hollywood CA. I think the entertainment people should stay out of politics . I’m free to travel where I want and Georgia is on my list .

  16. And on a side note… why does anyone care what Alyssa Milano has to say anyway? Unless you happen to be dating her :-O
Is she the “influencer” de jour?

  17. Reading most of the responses here, it’s very refreshing to see that, contrary to what the liberal press would have you believe, the majority of people do in fact have traditional values.

  18. Republicans and the far right only care about babies when they are in the womb. Once they are born they don’t give a hoot about them. And no, I am not a bleeding heart liberal. I’m just as anti-left as I am anti-right.

  19. Dolce, you are not a liberal, you are partisan “left”. This is not exactly partisan issue. A lot of liberals are pro-life. Do not confuse a good old liberals (as late Daniel Patrick Moynihan. D-NY) with modern crazy left like AOC.
