Rising out of the waters of the Tagus River off the shore of the pier of the Praça do Comércio or Commerce Plaza — which used to be known as the Terreiro do Paço or Palace Yard — are the Cais das Colunas or Column Wharf in Lisbon.
Cais das Colunas in Lisbon. Sunday Morning Photograph.
The two columns are a popular site in the capital city of Portugal and purportedly represent the two pillars of the temple of Solomon — wisdom and devotion — as they mark the top of the marble staircase which leads down into the river. Cais das Colunas is also considered to be both a historical landmark and a symbol of the port of entry to Lisbon.
I was fortunate to catch a photograph of a sailboat on the river centered between the two columns on that warm sunny day in June, as this area can be quite crowded.
Final Boarding Call
