Although Unlikely, Expect Issues

Cartera Commerce, Incorporated is the company which operates the MileagePlus Shopping portal — as well as powers many of the shopping mall Internet web sites for airlines in addition to that of United Airlines — but the company has not had a perfect record with satisfaction amongst its customers.

One of the more well-known cases is that of FlyerTalk member Marathon Man, who sued Cartera Commerce, Incorporated for $7,000.00 plus expenses back in March of 2012, as he personally had greater than 300 outstanding mileage transactions with them which should have resulted in bonuses awarded to him from the United Airlines Months of Miles debacle of a promotion from August of 2011 of greater than 250,000 United Airlines MileagePlus frequent flier loyalty program miles.

His court case case was heard in the historic town of Concord, Massachusetts on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 9:00 in the morning. The $7,000.00 plus expenses is the maximum for which he could sue in Massachusetts, which is the home state to both Marathon Man and the corporate headquarters of Cartera Commerce, Incorporated.

Although Marathon Man finally received the United Airlines MileagePlus frequent flyer loyalty program miles which he was originally owed, FlyerTalk member CarteraCommerce — a company representative for Cartera — claimed that:

“In summary, the Magistrate ruled in favor of Cartera, which means that Cartera was not required to pay Marathon Man any part of the claim or costs outlined in the claim. There was no out-of-court settlement, and neither party is subject to any type of confidentiality agreement. Marathon Man did indeed receive all of the miles he requested Cartera to investigate, because Cartera’s customer care team successfully advocated on his behalf with each relevant merchant. Before he filed his lawsuit against Cartera, the customer care process had been completed for the missing miles inquiries discussed in his claim, and Cartera had requested that United Airlines move these awarded miles to his frequent flier account.”

A precedent was set in this case where the plaintiff was awarded the frequent flier loyalty program miles due to him, although there was no definitive indication as to whether or not he was reimbursed for his time and expenses — legal and otherwise.

Marathon Man speculated that FlyerTalk members had been adversely affected by other promotions involving Cartera Commerce, Incorporated, including the following:

My Personal Experience

I can tell you that I personally had never received the 500 United Airlines MileagePlus frequent flier loyalty program miles that I was supposed to have earned by installing their shopping portal toolbar into my Internet web browser software, nor had the toolbar search function earned me any miles in several months. The shopping portal toolbar had since been discontinued.

Chances are that you will not experience problems with this promotion — but be prepared to expect a less than flawless experience, just in case.

Still, I have sporadically used the shopping portals of at least two different airlines; and I have had no problems earning the proper amount of frequent flier loyalty program miles. Be aware that the adding of those miles can take as many as ten weeks; but if that happens after the expiration date of the miles in your account, take consolation of knowing that the date of the transaction is what counts and not when the transaction is approved.

If you intend to spend $250.00 anyway this week, you may as well earn 1,000 bonus award MileagePlus frequent flier loyalty miles in the process, which should extend the expiration date of the MileagePlus miles already in your account.
