Upon the completion of checking in to my stay at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Hinton recently, I was cheerfully handed one of the aforementioned certificates to my surprise by the woman behind the front desk, as I had no idea this promotion existed…

…and there are only a few terms and conditions, which are listed below.

The certificate is valid for reservations booked directly through a participating hotel property; via telephone through the central reservation office; via the official Internet web site of InterContinental Hotels Group; or for reservations booked through one of the official Internet web sites of the participating brands of InterContinental Hotels Group — including:

You must be a member of the IHG Rewards Club frequent guest loyalty program to participate in this promotion. The limit is 1,000 bonus IHG Rewards Club points per stay; and additional bonus points are awarded in the form of IHG Rewards Club point vouchers when the certificate is surrendered upon checking in.

Standard point voucher terms and conditions apply. Retroactive points will not be awarded for prior stays.

A stay is defined as consecutive nights spent at the same hotel or resort property — regardless of how many times you check in and check out — and a stay is qualified when paying qualifying rates, which include most business and leisure rates. Only one room per member per stay will be awarded the applicable 1,000 bonus IHG Rewards Club points via the point voucher.

The participating hotel properties — most of which are independently owned and operated — are responsible for delivery of the point voucher, as InterContinental Hotels Group is not responsible for the delivery of the advertised additional bonus offer.

This offer has apparently been in effect since Tuesday, November 1, 2016; but I did not know about it until staying at the aforementioned hotel property.

I also have not found an official Internet web site for this promotion to which can be linked; and I see nothing in the terms and conditions of the certificate where this offer cannot be combined with another offer — such as the IHG Rewards Club Accelerate promotion currently in effect, through which you can earn tens of thousands of IHG Rewards Club points.

Nevertheless, I was surprised to receive the certificate — and I just might give it away soon…

  1. I received one of these surprise certificates also on an overnight layover in Calgary about 6 weeks ago. Also received an ever friendly Canadian welcome upon walking thru the front door “Good evening Mr. XXXX , we are glad to see you and have upgraded your room” now this is before I even made it to all the way to the front desk!
    I’m going to guess that the “what are your room rates?” Walk thru the front door is different than “my cab just left, and I HAVE a reservation, after 10 hours of flying” walk. I asked if I was the last person checking in? They admitted there were two left to check in but were certain it was me. I can read upside down, backwards, and mirrored pretty easy, I glanced down at the desk and agreed with them they were right (the other guest paper was like 7 syllables, and several punctuation marks long for the last name…I’m an obvious white Brit/American.

    Funnily I got the same treatment about a week later at Yokohoma Grand…guessing i was the last white guy to check in that night, (and upgraded) and a month later at a Mid-South HIX where I walked in the front door to be greeted by name and an upgraded room, merely asked for my ID as a formality…I WAS the last one to check in that night…

    Overall…I like the trend and the extra effort from the desk agents. The fact it’s also always worked for suite upgrades doesn’t hurt any, and makes Spire feel a bit more worth it!
