FlyerTalk member nhg claims to have created the most expensive sundae in the world, according to an article written by Stacy Finz of the San Francisco Chronicle in a section known as SFGate — not related to The Gate here on FlyerTalk.
At a cost of $3,333.33 and created last year, “The World’s Most Expensive Ice Cream Sundae” is a banana split made with syrups from three rare dessert wines — a 1960s vintage port, a Chateau D’Yquem, and a German Trockenbeerenauslese — and served with an ice cream spoon from the 1850s. $1,111.11 — one third of the purchase price — will be donated to a local land trust. You must order this dessert one day in advance in order to have a cellist perform as you consume it.
Three Twins Ice Cream was originally founded by nhg — also known as Neil Gottlieb — in 2005. More information about the company was posted by Gottlieb when he was seeking votes in a video competition for small businesses, which was sponsored by American Airlines last year.
If either the names Neil Gottlieb or nhg sound familiar to you, it may be because he won first place last year in the Tenth Annual Road Warrior Contest of American Way — the official in-flight magazine of American Airlines — after soliciting FlyerTalk members to vote for him. Helping FlyerTalk to sweep the top prizes in that contest were FlyerTalk members Blue925 and Bcacho, who finished in second place and third place respectively.
In truly creative FlyerTalk fashion, there is a second expensive dessert on the menu, according to that same article: an all-expense paid trip to Mount Kilimanjaro with a real guide and Gottlieb. “Once we climb the mountain, we will chip away at the glacial ice and carry it back to camp, where we will churn as much ice cream as the customer can eat”, said Gottlieb. “The trip includes first-class airfare, five-star accommodations, a $10,000 donation to a nonprofit African environmental charity and a souvenir T-shirt for $60,000 for one and $85,000 for two.”
In the spirit of full disclosure and for the record, I have never tasted any ice cream produced by Three Twins Ice Cream. I do not know Neil Gottlieb, nor have I ever communicated with him, on FlyerTalk or via any other method of communication.
