History of the Former Las Vegas Hilton

Constructed on the grounds of a former racetrack known as Las Vegas Park, the International Hotel opened on Wednesday, July 2, 1969 as both the tallest building and largest hotel in the state of Nevada. The resort property was renamed as the Las Vegas Hilton approximately two years later and was under complete ownership by Hilton in 1972. After a number of expansions over the years, the Las Vegas Hilton became the largest hotel property in the world in 1981 with a total of 3,174 rooms.

After a number of changes in ownership over the years under the Hilton brand, the Las Vegas Hilton resort property became The Las Vegas Hotel & Casino on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 due to the expiration of a license agreement with Hilton Worldwide. The hotel property defaulted on a loan of $252 million in 2010 and attempted to restructure its debt with Goldman Sachs in 2011. The millions of dollars in debt, a failure to maintain the minimum standards as required by the Hilton brand, and an oversupply of hotel rooms in Las Vegas all contributed to the demise of the resort property to remain under the Hilton brand as the Las Vegas Hilton.

Westgate Resorts purchased the Las Vegas Hotel from Goldman and Gramercy on Monday, June 30, 2014 for a price between $150 million and $170 million.

Although Hilton had other hotel and resort properties in Las Vegas back in 2012, frequent travelers mourned the loss of this historic resort property from the brand portfolio of Hilton, as it was legendary in offering inexpensive rates such as $49.00 per night with full Hilton HHonors benefits and coupon books with additional discounts. It was a great resort property at which to stay in order to renew your Hilton HHonors VIP elite status for the next year without having to spend a lot of money — unless, of course, you gambled in its casino.

On the other hand, the hotel property itself was showing its age when I last stayed there years ago. I stayed at this property several times and was treated well overall, but it certainly was far from being one of the best properties of the Hilton Worldwide portfolio.

If you want to stay at this resort property and are a member of Choice Privileges, you can now book your reservations through the official Internet web site of Choice Hotels.
