Hair-Raising New Items Now Banned By the Transportation Security Administration For Checked Baggage

Traveling in style just became slightly less possible.

Three hair-raising new items have now been officially banned by the Transportation Security Administration of the United States for transporting in checked baggage — but the good news is that these items are still permitted for travel as long as they have a safety cover that is fitted over the heating element which prevents them from accidentally being turned on or activated in the bag that you carry aboard the airplane.

Because butane or gas cartridges are now banned in checked luggage, the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States now has an updated policy which irons out the details pertaining to the restrictions of the following cordless items from being permitted in your checked luggage when flying as a passenger:

  • Curling irons or flat irons which contains gas cartridges
  • Curling irons or flat irons that are fueled by butane
  • Spare gas cartridges for curling irons or flat irons

The Transportation Security Administration also bans cordless hair straighteners and flat irons in checked luggage with lithium metal, lithium ion batteries, or fuel from either gas or butane.

Moreover, a maximum of only one cordless curling iron or flat iron is permitted per passenger.

Any cordless curling irons which contain gas cartridges or butane that are discovered in a checked bag will be removed and turned over to the airline as a hazardous materials item.

Corded electric curling irons and hair straighteners remain unaffected by the restrictions, as they continue to be permitted in checked baggage.

Final Boarding Call

In addition to the flammability of gas and butane, lithium products have also been known to ignite aboard airplanes and cause a potential hazard:
