Ice Table. Sunday Morning Photograph.

Time to chill out for a while.

The month is August. Much of the northern hemisphere is ensconced in the heat of summer. Perhaps this photograph of a table coated in ice will help cool things off — temporarily, at least.

The symmetrical photograph was taken after an ice storm. Ice storms would be so much more useful in the summer to cool people off, in my opinion — but I guess that is what hail is for, I suppose.

Final Boarding Call

Trivia time: Hail is caused by water droplets which are caught up in the strong updrafts of cumulonimbus clouds — which are the source of thunderstorms — to well above the freezing level. This process is repeated to create a hailstone, which can grow as additional water freezes onto it — depending on how strong are the updrafts in the cloud. Eventually, the hailstone becomes too heavy for the chilly updrafts to support it; and it ultimately falls to the ground. These balls of ice are present mainly during summer because cumulonimbus clouds form from the energy of the heat combined with humidity and can tower up to ten miles high, at which sub-zero temperatures are present at those altitudes.
