J. Gilbert’s in Omaha is actually one of six locations of this restaurant, whose original location was established in Kansas City by Joe Gilbert. Although the Omaha location is still considered to be fairly new to the Capitol District, it is considered to be one of the best steakhouses in the city.
J. Gilbert’s in Omaha. Restaurant Review.
While I was on a business trip in Omaha, J. Gilbert’s appeared on my radar as I was searching for a restaurant to dine on midwestern beef — so I walked the couple of blocks in the chilly night air from the hotel property at where I was staying to the restaurant.
I entered the restaurant through the indoor entrance inside of the Omaha Marriott Downtown at the Capitol District hotel property.
The restaurant was quite lively and crowded. The dress code is casual.
The table at which I sat is by the wall in the center of the photograph shown above.
After being seated, a round loaf of fresh warm bread was served with two ramekins of whipped butter.
Pretzel? Onion Rings? Sign me up for these Pretzel Crusted Onion Rings, which were crunchy and flavorful — although the pretzel flavor was rather subtle and muted.
A trio of dipping sauces accompanied the Pretzel Crusted Onion Rings: mustard thyme, parmesan garlic, and steak sauce. My favorite was the mustard thyme because of the faint pretzel flavor. $15.00.
Comprised of shrimp, tomatoes, basil, spinach, ancho chile butter, and parmigiano reggiano, the Shrimp Durango appetizer was beautifully plated and full of flavor. Some of the aforementioned fresh bread was used to sop up the sauce. $18.00.
The Center-Cut Filet Mignon was eight ounces of prime Black Angus beef and cooked almost to perfection. A choice of two side dishes was included in the price of $50.00 for this entrée. Yukon mashed potatoes and a smoky creamed corn with bacon accompanied this dish…
…while roasted Brussels sprouts with prosciutto & mustard and Poblano au gratin potatoes accompanied this filet mignon. $50.00.
The Chocolate Velvet Cake consisted of a deliciously sweet combination of chocolate mousse, chocolate ganache, and raspberry ice cream — as well as a fresh raspberry and what seemed to be freshly made whipped cream. $11.00.
Final Boarding Call
I found both the food and the service at J. Gilbert’s in Omaha to be just shy of excellent, which is why I recommend dining at this steakhouse. The prices may seem a bit expensive — but considering both the quality and amount of food that is included, the cost is well worth the experience.
J. Gilbert’s in Omaha is a different type of steakhouse than the stalwart known as The Drover, which I also highly recommend.
The restaurant is conveniently located inside of the Omaha Marriott Downtown at the Capitol District hotel property in downtown Omaha in Nebraska near the Omaha Convention Center.
