Due to the latest winter weather system, consider ensuring that you have alternate plans ready to be implemented in case your travels are adversely affected because of a major winter storm to impact northeastern United States March 2023 — and southeastern Canada will be affected as well — exactly 30 years after what was called the Storm of the Century impacted the eastern half of the United States on a Saturday.
Major Winter Storm to Impact Northeastern United States: March 2023 Travel Alert
The following statement is currently posted at the official Internet web site of the National Weather Service of the United States:
Nor’easter to Impact the Northeast; Another Atmospheric River Event Impacts California
A coastal low pressure will strengthen rapidly into a major Nor’easter that significantly impacts the Northeast this evening through Wednesday with areas of heavy snow, strong winds, coastal flooding, and beach erosion. Another major winter storm is set to move across California late today through Wednesday with areas of heavy rain and snowmelt producing flooding, high winds, and mountain snow.
The map of the United States from the National Weather Service indicates that winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings have been issued from extreme northeastern Pennsylvania all the way to the easternmost tip of Maine; and freeze warnings and freeze advisories have been issued for much of the southeastern United States from western Arkansas to extreme southeastern Virginia.
Accumulation of up to as much as 36 inches of snow is expected for portions of southern New York, northwestern Connecticut, central and western Massachusetts, southern Vermont, and southern New Hampshire. Snow in general is forecast to accumulate between Michigan all the way to Prince Edward Island, which includes the cities of New York, Boston, Bangor, Hartford, Utica, Montpelier, Manchester, Binghamton, Portland, and Albany.
Beginning at 8 p.m., the Thruway (I-87/I-90) will initiate a ban on all tandem and empty tractor trailers from I-87 exit 17 (Newburgh) to I-90 exit 36 (Watertown) and the length of the Berkshire Spur, until further notice.

Travel will be affected accordingly, as travel restrictions are already being issued for the New York State Thruway and other roadways throughout the state.
At least five counties in New Jersey are officially under a state of emergency.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations
If you are traveling to, from, or within the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada over the next few days or so, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this winter weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.
If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary.
Here are nine airlines which have issued travel alerts as a result of this weather system:
- American Airlines has issued travel alerts for Montréal and 19 airports in nine states for Tuesday, March 14, 2023 through Wednesday, March 15, 2023; and Monday, March 20, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Delta Air Lines has issued travel alerts for 17 airports in six states for Tuesday, March 14, 2023 through Wednesday, March 15, 2023; and Saturday, March 18, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- United Airlines has issued travel alerts for 16 airports in nine states for Tuesday, March 14, 2023 through Wednesday, March 15, 2023; and Monday, March 20, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Southwest Airlines has issued travel alerts for eleven airports in six states for Tuesday, March 14, 2023 through Wednesday, March 15, 2023; and Wednesday, March 29, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- JetBlue Airways has issued travel alerts for 14 airports in seven states for Tuesday, March 14, 2023 through Wednesday, March 15, 2023; and Saturday, March 18, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Frontier Airlines has issued travel alerts for eight airports in five states for Tuesday, March 14, 2023 through Wednesday, March 15, 2023.
- Spirit Airlines has issued travel alerts for six airports in five states for Tuesday, March 14, 2023 through Wednesday, March 15, 2023; and Monday, March 20, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Air Canada has issued travel alerts for:
- Six airports in three provinces for Tuesday, March 14, 2023 through Wednesday, March 15, 2023.
- Four airports in four states for Tuesday, March 14, 2023.
- Porter Airlines has issued travel alerts for:
- Fredericton, Halifax, Moncton, and Newark for Monday, March 13, 2023 through Wednesday, March 15, 2023.
- Boston for Monday, March 13, 2023.

Do not be surprised to see additional airlines issue travel waivers — as well as existing travel waivers being extended — as this winter weather system progresses towards the east.
