Martial Law Declared on South Korea December 2024: Travel Alert

This situation is currently evolving rapidly.

Martial law has been declared on South Korea December 3 2024 by its current president, who vowed to eliminate “anti-state” forces during a surprise address on late night television as he grapples against a domestic political opposition that controls the parliament of the country.

Yoon Suk Yeol claimed that the process of the parliament is being held hostage by opposition parties; and that the emergency declaration of martial law is necessary to protect the country from the communist forces of North Korea. Military troops have attempted to enter the assembly building of the parliament. Fire extinguishers were reportedly sprayed by aides of the parliament as they tried to push the soldiers back and force them to retreat.

Under martial law, activities by members of parliament and political parties would be banned; and that the command of marital law would control the media and publishers until further notice, as no timeframe had been set as to when or how martial law would end — but members of parliament unanimously voted to lift the declaration hours after martial law was declared.

The last time martial law was declared in the country was in October of 1979.

Meanwhile, the official currency of South Korea has sunk to its lowest level in years against the United States dollar. At the time this article was written, one United States dollar is equivalent to 1,423.29 South Korean won.

Airlines have yet to announce any travel waivers as a result of the civil unrest that South Korea is currently experiencing — but that could change. Hopefully, stability will return to the country as quickly as possible.

Regardless, if you do plan on traveling to South Korea, you may not necessarily be in danger — but you could experience disruptions in transportation, dining, and other services there. Keep yourself updated as to the latest developments that occur there…

…and please travel safely.

  1. A BBC news reporter asked a policeman in Seoul about it but the policeman said nothing has been ordered and that he heard about it in the news. If this is accurate, it is only a political move and not a real state of emergency.

Declarations of martial law might seem like chaos, but it’s possible that this is a rare exception. It is true that troops entered parliamentary grounds but have left.

    1. I hope that is true, derek.

The purpose of this article is to help readers who may be traveling to South Korea to be aware of the current instability that is occurring there; and this situation is quickly evolving…

  2. I have friends who work for South Korea’s NIS and its foreign ministry. I am expecting it to be business as usual when I visit them later this month.

The current President is Trump-like nuts, but fortunately the majority of legislators aren’t going to put up with this and the Korean military ought to know better than support a de facto dictatorial move. If Trump would have lost the election, this Korean President would have far less confidence in being able to pull this coup off.

      Safe travels to you.

      1. Coup attempt over. It has been defeated by freedom-loving Koreans and they aren’t going back to a dictatorship.

My fellow Americans, take notes. The pupil has bettered the teacher.

        1. Really better? Several former Presidents in Korea are in prison. Before the pandemic, half of them were in prison.

Korea is not better than America.

A side note, if exchanging a little cash at ICN airport, go to the departure floor, not arrivals. The exchange rate is better even among the same major banks that have windows on both levels.

          1. Criminal law-violating heads of government/state should go to jail/prison under the same law as for the non-elite if justice isn’t to be a hypocritical charade. No better lesson could be sent and had by the public than if a crook like Trump was sentenced to time behind bars rather than be given a get out of jail free card by a crooked Supreme Court and a spineless political party made into a cult of personality.

I stand very proud of South Koreans who stood up for democracy and even against the wrong guy for the job for whom they had voted. MAGA cult could learn a thing or two from what the South Koreans just did in the face of an assault against the state by their own elected President.

The pupil has bettered their teacher.

  3. Our single biggest foreign military base in terms of US personnel is in South Korea. A 40k+ American presence.
