More Winter Weather. More Travel Waivers. February 2025 Travel Alert.

The following statement is currently posted at the official Internet web site of the National Weather Service of the United States:

Eastern Storm Bringing Impacts from Excessive Rainfall, Severe Thunderstorms, and Winter Weather This Weekend

A winter storm is moving across the eastern U.S. this weekend. Significant flash flooding is ongoing associated from very heavy rainfall over parts of Tennessee and Kentucky. Further south, severe thunderstorms may bring damaging winds and tornadoes later today over the lower Mississippi River Valley. Heavy snow will fall over northern New York into northern New England through early Monday.

The map of the United States from the National Weather Service currently indicates winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories from eastern Nebraska all the way to eastern Québec; and south to northern Texas and western North Carolina. Additionally, flood watches have been issued from eastern Arkansas all the way to southwestern Pennsylvania; and flash flood warnings and flood warnings have been issued from eastern Texas all the way to western Virginia and southern West Virginia. Winter storm watches and extreme cold watches have been issued from western Montana to central Minnesota. High wind watches and high wind warnings have been issued from southern Texas all the way to all of Long Island in New York. Gale warnings, storm warnings, and small craft advisories have been issued for the entire east coast of the United States and further north into Canada.

The aforementioned loop shows that snowfall will be likely to occur through Monday, February 17, 2025 from central Washington state all the way to eastern Québec and as far south as northern Texas. Significant amounts of rain are likely from extreme eastern Texas all the way to extreme southern Maine. Ice is possible from northern Pennsylvania to southern Maine. Severe thunderstorms are predicted from eastern Texas to western Georgia; and up to 13 inches of rain, flash flooding, hail, winds of up to 90 miles per hour, and tornadoes may result.

Strong winds and frigid air will return to the northern United States.

As much as 18 inches of snow could accumulate in local areas.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to, from, or within the northern regions of the United States and southern regions of Canada over the next couple of days or so, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to these winter weather systems which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary.

Here are twelve airlines which have issued travel alerts as a result of this weather system:

Final Boarding Call

Keep in mind that just because an airline issued travel waivers for some airports does not mean that your flight will not be affected. Travel will be hazardous in the southeastern United States even though no travel waivers were issued, which could cause delays or cancellations…

…and the domino effect of delays and cancellations could affect flights at airports where the weather may be optimal for flight.

Do not be surprised to see additional airlines issue travel waivers — as well as existing travel waivers being extended — as these winter weather systems progress towards the northeast.

Be sure to contact your airline or transportation provider for the latest information pertaining to your travels — if they are adversely affected — and please: travel safely.
