Mullet’s Fish Camp & Market in Saint Petersburg in Florida. Restaurant Review.

You do not have to wear a mullet hairstyle to dine here. Whew. That was a close shave.

Mullet’s Fish Camp & Market in Saint Petersburg in Florida is a seafood restaurant which is not situated on or near a body of water — but the menu options looked appetizing and even tantalizing.

Mullet’s Fish Camp & Market is in a fairly quiet area only a few minutes south of downtown Saint Petersburg. The atmosphere is casual.

The Smoked Fish Spread was “made from scratch with our own smoked fish” — although I never did find out specifically what type of fish was used. It was ordered as the starter for our table and served with saltine crackers and a slice of lemon with a bottle of hot sauce. It was superior overall to that at The Big Catch at Salt Creek — especially as it contained an abundant amount of large pieces of fresh fish, which is unusual for a fish spread. It was definitely freshly prepared; but I would have preferred that it was served with some vegetables as was the similar appetizer at The Big Catch at Salt Creek. $10.99 for eight ounces, which was ordered; or $6.99 for four ounces

Mullet’s Style Fish Tacos were two or three flour tortillas with your choice of shrimp, mahi, or Gulf grouper. The Florida Man style was chosen, as the mahi was sautéed in a house-made citrus-herb butter and “served with our own Florida inspired Slaw”. Two other styles which were available for the tacos were either The Bobby Lee or The Joe Dirté.

You can choose from side dishes such as two types of fries, seasoned black beans, Island Citrus rice, creamy cole slaw, or seasonal vegetables. The grilled mahi was solid — as in being rated eight on a scale of ten. The fries were good; but a really flavorful honey mustard was ordered on request for them. $14.99 for two tacos, which was ordered; or $18.99 for three tacos

Gulf Grouper was one of the catches of the day; and it was ordered blackened with a side of broccoli and a side of Island Citrus rice. The fish was fresh and nicely savory and spicy. Although the citrus note was apparent in the rice, it was rather bland. The broccoli actually had more flavor, as it seemed to have been sautéed in a sauce. A slice of lemon and a ramekin of remoulade are served with this dish; but tartar sauce was also requested. Neither sauce was better than the other, as they were both differently flavorful. $34.99

This Gulf Grouper was ordered Cajun fried with a side of broccoli and a side of Island Citrus rice. This fish was excellent, as it was overall one of the best fried fish dishes ever had. I usually prefer blackened fish; but the Cajun fried cooking style slightly edged out the blackened cooking style, in my opinion. One person thought that the Island Citrus rice was too hard and had a smoky flavor that was so strong and pronounced that it was almost to the point of tasting burnt.

For an addition four dollars, you can choose from the aforementioned Mullet’s Styles of The Florida Man, The Bobby Lee, or The Joe Dirté — none of which were ordered for either of the grouper dishes. $34.99

Final Boarding Call

I recommend dining at Mullet’s Fish Camp & Market. The food was fresh and very good; members of the staff were friendly; the service had no issues; and the ambiance of dining casually al fresco was nice; but no water views are available because the restaurant is not situated near any body of water. That did not deter from the dining experience.
