Murty Rabbitt’s in Galway in Ireland. Restaurant Review.

Although it is not perfect, it is a solid choice for traditional Irish fare.

As Murty Rabbitt’s in Galway in Ireland was located 120 meters from the hotel property at where we were staying, we decided to take a quick walk of approximately two minutes to dine there for dinner. As one of the oldest pubs in Galway, Murty Rabbitt’s Bar Kitchen Garden was established in 1872 and is an ardent supporter of the Connacht Rugby team.

The seating and decor inside had a quaint ambiance. Dining at Murty Rabbitt’s felt comfortable — and its location was convenient. I did not see the garden that is located behind the establishment.

To start off the meal, Murtys Homemade Golden Fried Fishcakes were served with salad and sweet chilli jam. We liked the fish cakes — but my dining companion disliked the salad, which I wound up eating. €9.50

The Fish and Chips comprised of beer battered cod that was sourced locally and came with tartar sauce, cole slaw, chips, and a slice of lemon. The battered crust was crunchy; and the fish was a good texture and firmness. The tartar sauce had a mild but distinct flavor which did not overwhelm the fish. The chips were very good. The cole slaw was terrible and uneaten, as it was “swimming” in runny mayonnaise. €18.00

Murtys Fish Pie was similar to a traditional Shepard’s pie; but it contained no peas. It comprised of mixed seafood that was locally sourced; and it was topped with mash potato and an herb crust. A side salad — similar to the aforementioned salad that came with the fish cakes — and a wedge of lemon accompanied this dish. My dining companion quite enjoyed the pie. I did not like the fish pie because it was too creamy and contained melted cheese — but I did eat the salad, which was okay but not great. €17.00

Final Boarding Call

Dining at public houses in Ireland named Murty and Durty seems to be a flurty theme here.

I recommend dining at Murty Rabbitt’s Bar Kitchen Garden as a good place to dine on traditional Irish fare. The food and service were both good; the ambiance was jovial but not too noisy; and the prices were fairly reasonable for the quantity of food that was provided. The total cost of the meal was $49.36 in United States dollars.

Murty Rabbitt’s Bar Kitchen Garden is located in the city center of Galway.
