Northern Bronx and Yonkers in New York from the air is quite easy to spot — even if you are not very well versed in the geography of the greater metropolitan area of the city of New York.
Northern Bronx and Yonkers in New York From The Air. Sunday Morning Photograph.
Looking towards the east northeast direction, the wooded area with the rather straight edge is Van Cortlandt Park in the northern part of the borough of The Bronx — it is part of the 36,752 acres of open green space and parks that comprise approximately 25 percent of the borough — and that edge marks the demarcation between the city of New York and the city of Yonkers. The highways that cut through the park — from left to right — are the Henry Hudson Parkway or New York State Highway 9A; Mosholu Parkway; and the Major Deegan Expressway, which is also Interstate 87. Once the Henry Hudson Parkway crosses from Bronx County to Yonkers in Westchester County, it becomes the Saw Mill River Parkway; and Interstate 87 becomes part of the New York State Thruway.
The Bronx River Parkway is shown in the upper right quarter of the photograph. It follows along the Bronx River, which generally divides The Bronx in half. In 1907, the Bronx River Parkway is the earliest limited access highway to start construction; but a section of the Long Island Motor Parkway opened for traffic prior to the conclusion of 1908, opening before the Bronx River Parkway as the first limited access highway to be put into use. The Bronx River Parkway is the first limited access highway to be equipped with a median to safely separate the flow of opposing directions of traffic.
The blue water is Hillview Reservoir, which has a maximum capacity of 900 million gallons and is one of the reservoirs that provides drinking water for the city of New York.
Final Boarding Call
Trivia time: The Bronx was named after Jonas Bronck, who came from Europe and settled in the area. Landmarks in the area became known as Bronck’s River and Bronck’s Land — hence, The Bronx; although some people claim that the Broncks referred to Jonas and his wife.
