The Parthenon in Greece is now free of obstructions for the first time in decades — approximately 200 years, to be more exact — as visitors can now view the historic and legendary architectural structure with no scaffolding covering any part of it on any side of it…
Parthenon in Greece Now Free of Obstructions For the First Time in Decades
…but that distinction will temporary, as new scaffolding will be erected along the western side of the Parthenon in approximately one month in order to continue conservation work. That scaffolding will be lighter and aesthetically much closer to the logic of the monument instead of being a complete eyesore — but the good news is that once the renewed conservation work is completed some time during the early part of summer in 2026, that new scaffolding will be removed to reveal the Parthenon free of obstructions once again.
People who walk along the broad pedestrian streets that circle around the base of the hill of the Acropolis — especially along the western side, which arguably has the best view from the street — might not be used to seeing an unobstructed view of the marble temple from the middle of the fifth century Before the Common Era. The scaffolding that was erected approximately 20 years ago along the western façade of the Parthenon for conservation work has been removed, allowing an uncluttered view of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization — which is more popularly known as UNESCO — World Heritage site.
Final Boarding Call
The Parthenon is only one component of the Acropolis — but it is the most famous component of what is the most popular site for tourism in Greece, as approximately 4.5 million people visited in 2024. It was built to honor Athena, who was the patron goddess of Athens.
