Reciprocal Earning of Miles Now in Effect Between LATAM and Delta Air Lines

…and the tables for earning frequent flier loyalty program miles have been released by both airlines; and the reciprocal earning of miles between the SkyMiles and LATAM Pass membership programs became effective as of Wednesday, April 1, 2020.

On Thursday, September 26, 2019, Delta Air Lines officially announced a strategic partnership in which it will invest $1.9 billion for a 20 percent stake in LATAM Airlines Group S.A. through a public tender offer at $16.00 per share, to be funded principally with newly issued debt and available cash. That announcement led to the departure of LATAM Airlines Group from the oneworld alliance to be effective as of Friday, May 1, 2020; but the airline has not announced any plans to join the SkyTeam alliance.

As first announced on Thursday, February 27, 2020, members of SkyMiles and LATAM Pass will be able to earn and redeem miles in both of the frequent flier loyalty programs across the networks of Delta Air Lines and LATAM Airlines Group respectively effective as of — or after — Wednesday, April 1, 2020 across greater than 435 destinations worldwide.

  1. Partner-marketed flights will earn miles based on a percentage of distance flown as determined by the fare class paid. Unless otherwise noted, mileage credit is only applicable to partner flights of Delta Air Lines that are marketed and operated by that partner or Delta Air Lines. For the purposes of calculating mileage credit and Medallion Qualification Dollars, distance flown means the calculated distance between origin and destination, as determined by Delta Air Lines in its sole discretion, regardless of the actual distance traveled on any individual flight.
  2. Medallion Qualification Miles are used as a counter to determine SkyMiles Medallion Status. Flights and itineraries eligible for Medallion Qualification Miles will earn a minimum of 500 Medallion Qualification Miles per segment.
  3. Medallion Qualification Dollars apply to Medallion qualification. Flights marketed by the partner will earn Medallion Qualification Dollars based on a percentage of distance flown as determined by the fare class paid. For the purposes of calculating mileage credit and Medallion Qualification Dollars, distance flown means the calculated distance between origin and destination, as determined by Delta Air Lines in its sole discretion, regardless of the actual distance traveled on any individual flight.
  4. Medallion Mileage Bonus is based on base miles earned:
    • Diamond = 120 percent
    • Platinum = 80 percent
    • Gold = 60 percent
    • Silver = 40 percent

Summary

A strengthened — yet similar in some ways — partnership between American Airlines and Alaska Airlines also became effective as of Wednesday, April 1, 2020.

More choices which are flexible are almost always welcome to have for consumers; and the latest iteration of this partnership is proving itself to be just that.
