Save More on Fuel 2019 With Discover and American Express

If you hold an American Express card, you may have received a recent offer through which you can get a statement credit of five dollars by using your enrolled card for a single purchase of a minimum of $30.00 — which is paid at the pump with the swipe of the card and not paid at the cashier inside of the service station — at participating Phillips 66, 76 and Conoco locations in the United States by Thursday, August 1, 2019…

…and you are limited to $15.00 in total statement credits, which means that you can take advantage of this offer up to three times…

…but if you also hold a Discover credit card, you may want to wait until Monday, July 1, 2019 to take advantage of the offer from American Express, as you can receive five percent cash back on purchases of gasoline simply by using your Discover credit card during the current featured quarterly bonus. You are limited to a maximum of $1,500.00 in purchases — but that also includes rides with Uber and Lyft; and purchases of fuel at gasoline stations which affiliated with supermarkets and supercenters may not be eligible for this offer from Discover card. Purchases through Uber Eats will not qualify for this offer from Discover card.

Instead of a statement credit of five dollars, you may choose to receive 500 Membership Rewards points if you qualify for that offer, according to this article written by Nick Reyes of FrequentMiler. That offer is otherwise identical to the one through which you can earn a statement credit of five dollars.

Select Terms and Conditions of the American Express Card Offer

Enrollment is limited. You must first add the offer to your American Express card and then use that same card to redeem — meaning that if another card holder is on your account and has a different American Express card number which is used to purchase gasoline, your American Express card will not be credited with the purchase.

Only American Express cards which are issued in the United States are eligible for this offer. Limit one enrolled card per card member across all American Express offer channels. Your enrollment of an eligible American Express card for this offer extends only to that card.

The card must be swiped at the pump in order to be considered eligible. Excludes online, phone, or mobile app transactions, all other types of fuel purchases such as aviation fuel, Phillips 66 Lubricants Division, car wash and convenience store purchases located at gas stations, and purchases made at authorized retailers. Offer is non-transferable. Limit of three statement credits or total of $15.00 back per card member. The enrolled account must be active, in good standing and not in default to receive the statement credits. Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after Thursday, August 1, 2019, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase.

Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is returned or cancelled. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as qualifying for the offer, you will not receive the statement credit. For example, your transaction will not qualify if it is not made directly with the merchant. In addition, in most cases, you may not receive the statement credit if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process it.

Other terms and conditions apply to this offer.

Summary

Filling up almost any vehicle with $30.00 in gasoline is practically effortless with the price of fuel, which has increased in recent months and has currently leveled off — and even decreased in the cost per gallon within the past week or so by a few pennies — so maximizing on the offers for the purchases of fuel from both the Discover and American Express cards should not be a problem.

Until I was matriculated in a program to earn my Master of Business Administration degree, I did not realize that I had been using a technique called differential analysis for years when comparing the price per gallon of fuel combined with the offer from the credit card which I use — and I always performed all of the calculations spontaneously without a calculator, pen or pencil, paper, portable electronic device, or a computer of any sort. Using one credit card at a fuel station which offers gasoline at a lower price is not necessarily a better deal, depending on the credit card which is used.

I rarely give advice on credit cards; but even though you are not exactly going to be wealthy as a result, I at least want you to maximize on both offers if you happen to hold both the Discover and American Express cards…

…and notice that no affiliate links with any pushy sales pitches are in this article. The only way I hope to benefit is to read a comment from you that you did indeed save some money filling your vehicle with fuel through August 1.

Better yet, please impart any further ideas in the Comments section below on how readers of The Gate can save even more money purchasing fuel for their vehicles this summer.
