Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25 of every year around the world; and it already is a very special day for many people — but when a blanket of fresh snow is on the ground, the day becomes even better to the point where songs and movies have been inspired by what is known as a White Christmas…
Sunday Morning Photograph December 25 2022: White Christmas in Atlanta.
…and as rare as a White Christmas is in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area, it actually happened on Saturday, December 25, 2010 for the first time in 129 years. Even the National Weather Service of the United States gave the phenomenon a special mention:
A strong storm system moved across the Southeast on Christmas Day: a strong upper level disturbance over the Great Lakes extended south toward the Gulf Coast, and an associated area of low pressure moved across the northern Gulf of Mexico. Precipitation began Christmas Eve, quickly changing from rain to snow across extreme north Georgia. For the rest of north and central Georgia, the changeover occurred from northwest to southeast during the day on Christmas Day as temperatures dropped to near freezing. The highest accumulations occurred in the north Georgia mountains, where anywhere between 6 and 8 inches of snow were reported, but even the Atlanta Metro area saw between 1-3 inches — the first measurable snow on Christmas Day since 1881. As the system slowly moved east, snow continued on the 26th resulting in additional accumulations across east central Georgia.
Final Boarding Call
Rather than publish a similar message for Christmas as has been done annually at The Gate — which still applies for Christmas Day 2022 — I thought I would do something a little different.
Merry Christmas to you. Hopefully it will be the most festive and joyous one yet for you — despite the historic winter weather that has been crippling travel and wreaking havoc and chaos across much of the United States and Canada.
