Amsterdam is not only the capital city of the Netherlands; but it is also the most populous city in that country — and with a large population usually comes traffic congestion…
Sunday Morning Photograph November 27 2022: Bicycles in Amsterdam.
…but the people of Amsterdam help to relieve congestion of motor vehicle traffic while simultaneously keeping the air a little cleaner to breathe and getting a potentially good workout exercising by pedaling their bicycles — which seem to be an ubiquitous mode of transportation in that city — and having a broad infrastructure which supports that mode of transportation certainly helps: approximately 400 kilometers of bicycle paths are colored red to differentiate them from both foot paths and the roadways which motorists use.
The city is not a perfect utopia for bicycles, as thefts are widespread — and as many as 15,000 bicycles per year wind up in the waters of the 165 canals that are in Amsterdam and are “fished” by vessels known as boat cranes by Waternet, which is the water authority for Amsterdam and its surrounding area.
