The Brazen Head in Dublin is the oldest pub in Ireland and purportedly the fifth oldest restaurant in the world, as it was established in 1198 — that is 826 years ago — and that is where I wanted to eat dinner several nights ago.
The Brazen Head in Dublin: Oldest Pub in Ireland. Restaurant Review.
The outside area of the public house was crowded with people drinking. One passes this area on the way to the interior of the establishment.
“This is the area from where the original settlement that was to become Dublin got its name”, according to the official Internet web site of The Brazen Head. “Beside the pub is the Father Matthew Bridge crosses the river Liffey. It was at this very spot that the original crossing of the river was located. Here reed matting was positioned on the river bed which enabled travellers to cross safely at low tide.”
The seating and decor inside is rather unique in character and ambiance.
I was persuaded to try some Guinness, which is a stout beer that was created in Dublin in 1778 — and what better place to try it than in the oldest public house in Ireland? As with most alcoholic beverages, I really disliked the taste, as you can probably tell from the grimace on my face — but I had a mustache on my lip. A video of this experience exists. I loathe to publicly release it at this time. €7.60
A Portion of Brown Bread was ordered for the table with two pats of Dairygold Irish butter that were wrapped in foil. I am usually not a big fan of butter; but the bread and butter were very good. €2.50
The Fish and Chips comprised of beer battered cod, homemade tartar sauce, and chips. The fish was the perfect texture and firmness. The chips were good but not the best which I have ever had. €19.90
Remember that Guinness I did not like? I simply initially consumed it in the wrong form. The Beef and Guinness Stew was outstanding. I was amazed at the boldly strong flavor of the rich Guinness and thyme broth and the large tender chunks of prime Irish beef. The herb mashed potatoes were the perfect consistency and flavor for me. Mushrooms and vegetables completed this dish. I do not particular care for beef stew; but this was easily the best beef stew I have ever had. I would order it again in a heartbeat. Wow. Just wow. €19.90
Final Boarding Call
I recommend dining at The Brazen Head. The food was excellent. Members of the staff were friendly; the service was good; the ambiance was unique but jovially noisy; and the prices were fairly reasonable for the quality of food that was provided. The total cost of the meal was $55.40 in United States dollars.
The Brazen Head is located in the city center of Dublin just south of the River Liffey.
