“T his holiday season, a simple donation can take you to new heights”, according to an e-mail message I received earlier today from the United Airlines MileagePlus frequent flier loyalty program:
United is proud to team up with CrowdRise to create the Giving Tower for #GivingTuesday. Every donation adds a “brick” to this virtual tower and will support charities like March of Dimes, the American Red Cross and many more. You will then be able to watch all the donations build via the Giving Tower app.
To show our thanks for helping us build the tower, we’ll give you bonus award miles based on your donation to any one of the Giving Tower’s eight “Founding Charities”:
- Donate $50-$99 – earn 250 bonus miles
- Donate $100-$249 – earn 500 bonus miles
- Donate $250 or more – earn 1,000 bonus miles

Although donating to a charitable cause is usually meant to be altruistic, there is nothing wrong with earning some frequent flier loyalty program miles in the process — as well as having a chance to win some money. Everyone wins in this case.
