Travel Advisory Issued For the United States May 2020

“There have been numerous protests across the USA since 27 May 2020, some of which have turned violent, most notably in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Louisville, Kentucky; Atlanta, Georgia; and Los Angeles, California. There is potential for further protests and curfews may be enforced as a result. You should avoid demonstrations and protests, and follow the instructions of local authorities.”

Travel Advisory Issued For the United States May 2020

The paragraph you just read was part of this travel advisory which was issued for the United States from GOV.UK, which is the official Internet web site for the government of the United Kingdom…

…and do not be surprised if cities such as New York and Chicago are added to the travel advisory, as protests which started off peacefully had turned violent.

Protests have occurred in at least 30 cities in the United States in response to the death of George Floyd by at least one police officer in Minneapolis who pressed his knee into his neck to restrain him on Monday, May 25, 2020.

Violent protests have erupted in cities around the United States — resulting in fires burning, looting, blocked traffic on highways, injuries of police officers, the release of pepper spray, countless arrests, and the property of innocent entities being damaged — and in an effort to curtail any further violence and destruction of property from happening, curfews have been imposed in at least 25 cities in 16 states.

Summary

Do not be surprised if more countries issue travel advisories to the United States as a result of the demonstrations, which will likely continue until further notice — although with the current 2019 Novel Coronavirus pandemic, travel is still shut down in general for much of the planet.

Still, if you are planning to travel from the United Kingdom to the United States, check with the airline on which you plan on traveling as a passenger to ensure that your travel plans are uninterrupted…

…and everyone should stay away from the downtown areas of major cities in the United States in general — especially if a curfew has been imposed.

  1. Maybe they should add Washington, DC, too to the list.

Trump has been encouraging the US Secret Service to play from the Turkish presidential security playbook inside the US. Look up the video of Erdogan’s guards in DC beating up protesters critical of Turkey. No surprise that Trump and Erdogan sort of get along too well.

  2. Tell everyone to be scared of everything.
    Force people to stay inside.
Force citizens to lose their jobs without any choice.
    All for the ‘greater good’….

And, we’re surprised when a match is lit that blows everything up….
What, exactly, did we expect would happen when we oppressed citizens for months on end?

If not this one event, it would have been something else…
This is what happens when you try to control people.
Via government, via police and via fear.

  3. Protests that start out peacefully become a lot less peaceful when law enforcement organizations have too many trigger-happy, beat’em down types in the rank and file who are inclined to act out aggressively from the get go by even violently going after unarmed individuals rather than to attempt to de-escalate the tension and refrain from violence against individuals who protest vociferously but are unarmed and neither destroying property nor harming people.

By the way, a healthy police force would be strong on screening its applicants and current personnel for empathy skills and to try to screen out people with bully tendencies and anger-management problems. But unfortunately we do a very poor job at that in most of the world, and even that will not be enough in America. There are so many guns across the country that the police are constantly in fear of being shot or killed by gunfire and that fear makes people more likely to be angry and to act out quickly in anger while relying upon deeply-ingrained prejudices in doing so. And the police often feel like they have no one to rely upon other than fellow law enforcement personnel because there is a lot of anger and even hatred directed at law enforcement — due to the experiences so many common people have with law enforcement’s many bad apples. My heart goes out to the many good police out there who get the raw end of this situation due to the long history of a lack of weeding out of the many bad police personnel in the rank and file and due to their constant fear of too many guns out there, and so many people out there with a fear or even hatred of police personnel. The violence happening during these protesting times would be way less if the police organizations had gotten their act together by weeding out people who aren’t inclined to serve and protect all Americans equally and those who have a deficiency in empathy for all Americans regardless of background.

I am shocked to see so many videos of police personnel in the US behaving like the police (mis)behave in third world countries and brutal authoritarian states: destroying property, pulling out innocent pre-pubescent girls out of cars to hog-tie, smashing up standing vehicles, shooting rubber bullets and gas grenades at journalists, shoving and arresting people for filming.

America has a problem with systemic racism and an approach to policing that is systematically bad for Americans of all sorts. It’s long overdue that we recognize these truths and work toward seeing these problems get their long overdue solutions.
