If northern California and southern Florida are in your travel plans over the next couple of days or so, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — due to severe weather.
Travel Alert January 2023: Severe Weather Affects Northern California and Southern Florida
Severe weather is occurring from southwestern Oregon all the way to extreme northwestern Mexico and encompassing much of the state of California, with up to 12 inches of rain forecast in some local areas and wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour not out of the question. As much as 36 inches of snow could accumulate in the higher elevations in the mountains.

Widespread major flooding, mud slides, rock slides, avalanches, electrical power outages, damage to trees, closures of roads, and disruption of travel are all possible in the affected areas of California.
Meanwhile, a different weather system is bringing severe thunderstorms to Florida. Tornadoes are possible. Watch for significant flooding, damage to trees, and electrical power outages in the affected areas of the state.
Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations
If you are traveling to, from, or within northern California and southern Florida over the next couple of days or so, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to these weather systems which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.
If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary.

- American Airlines has issued travel alerts for:
- Seven airports in Florida for Wednesday, January 4, 2023; and Friday, January 6, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Six airports in California for Wednesday, January 4, 2023 through Sunday, January 8, 2023; and Wednesday, January 11, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Delta Air Lines has issued travel alerts for five airports in California for Thursday, January 5, 2023 through Friday, January 6, 2023; and Sunday, January 8, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- United Airlines has issued travel alerts for five airports in California for Wednesday, January 4, 2023 through Sunday, January 8, 2023; and Wednesday, January 11, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Southwest Airlines has issued travel alerts for:
- Four airports in California for Wednesday, January 4, 2023; and Wednesday, January 18, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Seven airports in Florida for Wednesday, January 4, 2023; and Wednesday, January 18, 2023 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Air Canada has issued a travel alert for San Francisco for Wednesday, January 4, 2023.
