Tsunami Warning Issued For California Coast December 2024: Travel Alert

A strong earthquake is what promoted this official warning.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the California coast earlier today, Thursday, December 5, 2024 by the United States Tsunami Warning System of the National Weather Service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States as a result of an earthquake which occurred off the coast at 1:44:24 in the afternoon Eastern Standard Time.

The tsunami warning stretches from the border which Douglas County and Lane County share in Oregon — which is ten miles southwest of Florence — to Davenport in California, which is approximately ten miles northwest of Santa Cruz. The San Francisco Bay Area is included in the official warning.

According to the National Weather Service, a tsunami warning means:

Take Action—Danger! A tsunami that may cause widespread flooding is expected or occurring. Dangerous coastal flooding and powerful currents are possible and may continue for several hours or days after initial arrival.
Follow instructions from local officials. Evacuation is recommended. Move to high ground or inland (away from the water).

The epicenter of the earthquake — whose magnitude was measured at 7 on the Richter scale — is located approximately 45 miles southwest of Eureka in California at a depth of eight miles.

Tremors from the strong earthquake — as well as a series of aftershocks — could be felt as far away as in San Francisco to the south and southwestern Oregon to the north. No damage or injuries were immediately reported at the time this article was written.
