T wo Boeing 737 airplanes — each operated by American Airlines and Southwest Airlines and each carrying 143 passengers — reportedly collided on the tarmac at LaGuardia Airport in New York earlier today at approximately 11:00 in the morning; but fortunately, no injuries were reported.
“The wingtip of the aircraft operating Southwest Airlines Flight #449 departing from New York LaGuardia to Denver came in contact with another aircraft that was awaiting a gate,” claimed a statement from Southwest Airlines as reported in this article written by Jessica Durando and Mary Bowerman for USA TODAY.
The airplane which operated as American Airlines flight 1104 from Dallas was reportedly taxiing to its gate as the airplane which operated as Southwest Airlines flight 449 was on its way to departing to Denver when the incident occurred.
The passengers and five flight crew members from the airplane operated by Southwest Airlines exited the jet via stairs before they were transported off the tarmac by bus. The aircraft was then taken out of service for inspection and repairs as alternative ways to get the passengers to their destination were being determined.
Personnel from the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States are reportedly investigating this incident, which is currently being discussed on both Milepoint and FlyerTalk here and here.
