Due to the effects of Typhoon Shanshan to affect Japan August 2024, you may want to consider delaying your travel — or, at least, keep yourself updated as to the latest information pertaining to the weather — if Japan is in your travel plans over the next few days.
Typhoon Shanshan to Affect Japan: August 2024 Travel Alert
Maximum sustained winds of Typhoon Shanshan — which is currently approximately 463 miles south southeast of Sasebo in Japan and moving west northwest at a speed of 16 miles per hour — are at 85 miles per hour, which means that it is currently equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane.
Landfall of Typhoon Shanshan could occur as early as Thursday, August 29, 2024 after it strengthens; and its path is currently projected to track along the spine of much of Japan.
Gusty winds and significant precipitation is possible in portions of Tokyo and much of Japan, which is expected to result in considerable urban flooding and flash flooding. Rough surf, strong rip currents, and a storm surge are expected to contribute to the aforementioned significant flooding of portions of much of Japan.
Expect electric power lines to fail and power to be out; trees to fall; and services such as trains to be delayed or temporarily suspended.
