WestJet, Delta Air Lines Reciprocal Partnership Details Announced

E ffective as of January 1, 2015, you can enjoy the benefits of a reciprocal partnership between WestJet and Delta Air Lines where you can earn or redeem your choice of either SkyMiles or WestJet Dollars regardless of whether the operator of the flight is Delta Air Lines or WestJet.

Unfortunately, earning elite level status is not part of this reciprocal partnership, as flights operated by WestJet will be ineligible for earning both Medallion Qualification Miles and Medallion Qualification Dollars towards elite level status in the SkyMiles frequent flier loyalty program; and flights operated by Delta Air Lines are not eEligible towards annual qualifying flight spend on WestJet.

Here are the charts from both WestJet and Delta Air Lines:

This reciprocal partnership — despite its shortcomings — will give members of the frequent flier loyalty programs of WestJet and Delta Air Lines more flight and destination options within the United States and Canada.

  1. I’m sorry, but a partnership without offering full MQMs is worthless to me. I’m a Platinum Medallion who basically needs every flight to be paid throughout the year. I got to 91k MQMs this year, so I guess I could have used miles on one of the bigger international trips, but at the end of the day I’m happier having 16,000 MQMs rollover to next year. I don’t really care about MQDs…I spent $6600 over the Platinum threshold this year…color me retarded.

  2. Thanks for this – but I am slightly confused – in the westjet statements it doesn’t say anything about redeeming westjet points or redeeming delta points for westjet flights

    Can you elaborate please?

    Thanks and love your blog!

    1. I apologize for your confusion, Scott; but please blame me, as I should have added the link to this press release from WestJet:

“In addition to the new accrual agreement, WestJet now also offers WestJet Rewards members the ability to use WestJet dollars on all code-share flights marketed by WestJet and operated by Delta. The two airlines will continue to work together to expand their relationship even further, including the introduction of full reciprocal redemption in the coming year that will allow members to redeem for destinations beyond WestJet’s current network.”

I should have also mentioned in the article that Delta Air Lines has been a code-share partner with WestJet since 2012.

Thank you for the positive feedback — I appreciate it!

      1. Thanks for the response!

So then I can look forward to eventually using Delta points to book westjet – that is huge!

Thanks and have a great weekend
