Winter Storm to Affect Northeastern United States: February 2024 Travel Alert

Winter Storm Impacts from the Southern to the Northeast U.S. Today into Tuesday
A winter storm will track from the lower Mississippi River Valley Monday into southern New England through Tuesday becoming a Nor’easter with heavy snow and gusty winds. On the warm side of this storm, scattered severe thunderstorms and heavy to excessive rainfall are forecast over parts of the Southeast. Damaging winds, flooding, and a few tornadoes will be possible.
The map of the United States from the National Weather Service currently indicates winter storm warnings, winter storm watches, coastal flood warnings, coastal flood watches, gale warnings, gale watches, and hazardous weather outlooks for the northeastern United States — as well as flood watches for much of the southeastern United States.
As much as 21 inches of snow could accumulate in an area from western Pennsylvania to extreme southeastern New Hampshire. Expect travel conditions to be substantially difficult; and expect outages of electrical power. Snow in general is expected to occur from extreme southeastern Indiana all the way to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador and as far south as southeastern West Virginia.
Moreover, rainy conditions are expected in many areas of the southeastern United States.
Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations
If you are traveling to, from, or within the northeastern United States and a small portion of southeastern Canada over the next few days or so, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this winter weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.
If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary.
Here are seven airlines which have issued travel alerts as a result of this weather system:
- American Airlines has issued travel alerts for 16 airports in seven states for Tuesday, February 13, 2024; and Thursday, February 15, 2024 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Delta Air Lines has issued travel alerts for 17 airports in eight states for Tuesday, February 13, 2024; and Thursday, February 15, 2024 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- United Airlines has issued travel alerts for 16 airports in eight states for Tuesday, February 13, 2024; and Sunday, February 18, 2024 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Southwest Airlines has issued travel alerts for eight airports in six states for Tuesday, February 13, 2024; and Tuesday, February 27, 2024 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- JetBlue Airways has issued travel alerts for ten airports in six states for Tuesday, February 13, 2024; and Thursday, February 15, 2024 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Spirit Airlines has issued travel alerts for six airports in six states for Tuesday, February 13, 2024; and Thursday, February 15, 2024 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
- Air Canada has issued travel alerts for:
- Five airports in four states for Tuesday, February 13, 2024.
- Six airports in four provinces for Tuesday, February 13, 2024 through Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
Final Boarding Call
Do not be surprised to see additional airlines issue travel waivers — as well as existing travel waivers being extended — as this winter weather system progresses towards the east and strengthens.
