Winter Weather Affecting Northern United States: February 2025 Travel Alert

At least 13 airlines have issued travel waivers.

Due to the latest weather system, consider ensuring that you have alternate travel plans ready to be implemented because of winter weather affecting the northern United States February 2025 — and portions of southern Canada will be affected as well.

The following statement is currently posted at the official Internet web site of the National Weather Service of the United States:

Pacific Storms Continuing to Impact the West; Impactful Winter Storm in the Central and Eastern U.S.

Pacific storms will continue to bring strong winds, heavy rain with a risk for flooding to northern and central California, and heavy mountain snow in the Sierras, southern Cascades, and northern Rockies through Friday. Winter storm to impact the Midwest to Mid-Atlantic, with a combination of snow, sleet and freezing rain later today through Thursday. Hazardous travel is expected.

The map of the United States from the National Weather Service currently indicates winter storm warnings, winter weather advisories, ice storm warnings, and flood watches from northeastern Montana all the way to western Maine and south to eastern Kentucky. Hazardous weather outlooks and dense fog advisories have also been issued for eastern Nebraska, western Missouri, extreme northeastern Oklahoma, and extreme northwestern Arkansas — as well as to extreme eastern Louisiana, southern Mississippi, southwestern Alabama, and the western panhandle of Florida.

The aforementioned loop shows that snowfall will be likely to occur through Friday, February 7, 2025 from northern Minnesota all the way to northern Maine from one winter weather system; and from Washington state south to northern California all the way to western Minnesota. Significant amounts of rain are likely in eastern Missouri all the way to southern Massachusetts. Ice is likely from extreme eastern central South Dakota all the way to southern Maine and south to northern Virginia, with as much as one-tenth of an inch possible in the area of eastern West Virginia, northern Virginia, western Maryland, and southern Pennsylvania. Severe thunderstorms are forecast for the area between extreme northeastern Arkansas and extreme southeastern Missouri to eastern Tennessee and southern Kentucky.

As much as nine inches of snow could accumulate in the northeastern portion of the state of New York, central Vermont, much of the state of New Hampshire, and southern Maine.

Winds of up to 65 miles per hour can occur from northern Wisconsin all the way to western Maine and as far south as eastern West Virginia.

In most of the aforementioned weather forecasts, expect outages of electrical power.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to, from, or within the northern United States over the next couple of days or so, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to these winter weather systems which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary.
