Yes, You Can Walk Between Terminal B and Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport. Here is How You Do It…

The walk should be faster than taking the free shuttle bus.

Yes, you can walk between Terminal B and Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport in New York, as I recently found out for myself — but be forewarned that you cannot walk between the two terminals without having to pass through the security checkpoint again if you happen to already be airside in one terminal and want to go to the other terminal.

Yes, You Can Walk Between Terminal B and Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport. Here is How You Do It…

I was a passenger aboard an airplane which was operated by Delta Air Lines between New York and Atlanta. Prior to the flight, I wanted to use the Chase Sapphire Lounge at LaGuardia Airport, as I knew that I would arrive at the airport early — but the lounge is located in Terminal B and Delta Air Lines is in Terminal C…

…and as is the case with both airports that are within the city of New York, one cannot walk between terminals airside once past the security checkpoint.

I researched via the Internet about walking from Terminal B to Terminal C, as they are located within 375 yards of each other; but I saw differing reports ranging from that doing so was impossible to being able to do so in as few as ten minutes.

A look at Google Maps shows the incorrect way of walking between both terminals — and yet, the sidewalk is visible north of the roadway. Almost the entire sidewalk is visible — except for when it is under a roadway or building.

Actually — unlike the directions Google Maps offers — you will never need to cross a road to get between terminals.

This is what you do if you want to walk from Terminal B to Terminal C, as the steps are actually really simple:

  • Head down to the lowest level where the buses and shuttles operate.
  • Go outside any set of doors and turn left.
  • Follow the sidewalk to Terminal C.

Follow the aforementioned instructions to walk in the other direction from Terminal C to Terminal B.

The walk should take anywhere between seven minutes and 15 minutes; but note that absolutely no signage is available about walking between the two terminals or along the sidewalk, giving no hint that the sidewalk even exists.

Also, the sidewalk has several sharp turns to it, as it is not straight. Looking at the sidewalk from Terminal B, you are forgiven if your first impression is that walking to Terminal C is virtually impossible, as it appears to be a dead end — but the sidewalk actually turns a sharp right before turning a sharp left.

Keep in mind that at least one portion of the sidewalk may be indirectly affected by ongoing construction adjacent to the sidewalk.

I had no issues going through the security checkpoints at either Terminal B or Terminal C. In fact, I showed the agent of the Transportation Security Administration my boarding pass. She did not skip a beat:

“Lounge?” she asked, smiling.

“Yup”, I replied.

“I ask because your flight does not depart from this terminal.”

We had a good laugh as she let me through. I breezed through that security checkpoint. The process could not have been any easier.

Final Boarding Call

You can take a free shuttle bus between the terminals — but note that traffic on the roadway only goes in one direction; and the route of the free airport shuttle bus travels around a loop to get from Terminal B to Terminal C…

…and if traffic is at a standstill — which is very likely at LaGuardia Airport — as many as 20 minutes could elapse by the time you get from Terminal B to Terminal C.

Taking the shuttle bus from Terminal C to Terminal B is significantly easier, as the ride is much shorter — but remember that you could wait a long time for the shuttle bus due to the aforementioned traffic.

Best of all, the walk is likely the safest way to travel between terminals, as concrete barriers separate the sidewalk from the roadways. The walk is quiet — albeit boring — and it cannot be any flatter; so it can be used by disabled people and people who are in wheelchairs…

Bonus Secret

I have purchased pastrami sandwiches with pickles and mustard on the side in Manhattan to travel back with me to Atlanta on numerous occasions over the years prior to the reconstruction of LaGuardia Airport and after the reconstruction — and not once have I ever been stopped at the security checkpoints at this airport due to the containers of mustard or the liquid from the half-sour pickles and sour pickles that are packaged in a plastic bag.

I suppose they must be considered solids…?!?
