Photographs: The Great Rift Valley From Above in Kenya

s we were driving north on highway B3 — which is one of the main roads out of Nairobi which eventually turns east after passing through the town of Mai Mahiu while on our way towards Masai Mara National Reserve — the downgrade of the road could be felt as the van curved through the trees…

…and then suddenly, the trees opened up to this panoramic view of a valley which resembled the American west — the Great Rift Valley…

It was the Great Rift Valley, which supposedly covers greater than 9,500 kilometers from the Middle East to southeastern Africa.

The three white dots you see on the right side of the photograph are satellite dishes. We would eventually pass them on the way to Masai Mara National Reserve after turning left in Narok and continuing on highway B3. Photograph ©2015 by Brian Cohen.

Proprietors of stalls attempt to sell you everything from animal skins and furs to crafts to food and drinks. We did stop along the way; but I did not purchase anything.

Stalls dot the west side of highway B3, often next to views of vistas of the Great Rift Valley. This way, they can aggressively sell to travelers who stop to photograph the view. Photograph ©2015 by Brian Cohen.

Once the van passed through the town of Mai Mahiu, it turned left to remain on highway B3 heading west through the Great Rift Valley…

  1. Did you drive this yourself or hire a driver? Did you book hotels with points or buy a package safari? Planning a trip to Kenya next January and trying to figure out the cheapest options!

    1. It was all part of a safari package which I purchased, Rachel.

The information with links is found in this article I recently wrote:

      http://thegatewithbriancohen.com/safari-call-box-lunch/

Nomad Africa Adventure Tours is the company through which I booked. The safari included ground transportation, lodging by camping in tents, all meals — and, of course, the safari itself. The cost was approximately $675.00 for four days — a great value, I thought.

Although they deserve the patronage, I do not want to oversell them either, which is why I did not mention them in this particular article pertaining to the Great Rift Valley. I also have not been posting the articles in order due to the fact that I am currently traveling; but I intend to create an article with the links in order so that all of the information is in one place.

I hope this helps, Rachel. If you need any more information, please let me know.
