All five runways are closed at Atlanta airport today, Friday, January 10 2025 until at least 2:00 in the afternoon Eastern Standard Time due to winter weather, which has resulted in the delays and cancellations of hundreds of flights across the United States.
All Five Runways Closed at Atlanta Airport: January 10 2025 Travel Alert
“Delta is managing worse-than-expected winter weather across the Southeast this weekend, including at our Atlanta hub, where all runways were closed by 9:20 a.m. ET”, according to Delta News Hub, which is the official Internet web site of Delta Air Lines for press releases. “We have canceled approximately 500 Delta and Delta Connection flights for Jan. 10. On Jan. 8, we issued a fare-difference waiver to allow customers to move existing bookings around the storm forecast. Delta will consider additional schedule adjustments as conditions dictate to safely manage through this storm’s impact. Customers can continue to monitor and manage their flights through the Delta app.”
The winter weather is part of a major storm system that has affected the southern United States between southeastern Arizona all the way to eastern North Carolina; and north into Michigan and New Brunswick in Canada.
“By approximately 9:20 a.m. ET, all five runways at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport were closed as airport officials worked to clear the runways of snow and ice”, according to the aforementioned press release. “Delta is working with all aviation stakeholders to safely open runways and resume operations at ATL.”
Final Boarding Call
I am currently in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area with no plans to travel today. Approximately two inches of snow have fallen at the time this article was published. At least I do not need to drive out in the snow like I did recently in Norway, Finland, and Sweden — but alas, no reindeer are wandering the streets outside. Instead, I may perhaps take in a hot chocolate or some homemade soup later today and just enjoy looking at the snow.
If your travels have been affected by the winter weather, be sure to contact your airline or transportation provider for the latest information pertaining to your travels — if they are adversely affected — and please: travel safely.
