I saw what I believe was a mule deer in Basalt in Colorado during my stay for one night at The Hoffmann Hotel Basalt Aspen, Tapestry Collection by Hilton as a guest of Hilton during a recent event for the press to highlight the new Hilton For Business program.

The deer was munching on some tall grass near Kodiak Lake when we approached.
As the veins on his snout and his ribs were clearly showing, this deer seemed to be emaciated.
“What are YOU looking at?” seemed to be the expression on the face of the deer prior to him leaving — possibly to seek greener pastures.

Trivia time: The mule deer — whose scientific name is Odocoileus hemionus — is a genre of deer that is indigenous to western North America. Its ears are large like those of mules — hence, the name mule deer.
