Devaluation of Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Continues 2024

Now points expire after...

The devaluation of Hertz Gold Plus Rewards in 2024 continues, as now points expire five years after you earned them — no matter what — and any activity in the membership account no longer extends them effective as of Tuesday, December 31, 2024.

According to the official e-mail message which I received earlier today from Hertz, “Effective December 31, 2024, points will expire after 5 years from when they were earned, regardless of rental activity. This means that any points that have been in your account for 5 years or longer will expire and be removed from your account if not used prior to December 31, 2024 — you currently have 4084 points set to expire by this date. But don’t worry! You’ll have almost 6 months to use those points to book free rental days through 2025.”

The five year point expiration does not apply to members who are residents of Canada. Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points are earned and redeemed on the base rental rate only. Taxes, fees, and options are excluded.

The aforementioned change is in addition to the current policy in which points will expire after twelve months of no rental activity.

Other New Policies — and a Tepid Promotion At Best

To help ease the hard landing of this new policy, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards points can now be transferred to or from an immediate family member who is also a Gold member — but this can only be done once per year at the maximum. The immediate family member must have had at least one rental activity in the prior twelve months. Activity means that a Hertz Gold Plus Rewards point was either earned or redeemed on a vehicle rental.

Redeeming points is easy, just follow the steps laid out here and you will be on your way to enjoying free rental days.

Effective September 1, 2024, no cancellation fee will be assessed when redeeming points. Cancel any time before pickup and you will be credited the full amount of points redeemed.

The new promotion is as follows:

  • Earn up to 3 FREE rental days for your vehicle rentals through Saturday, October 5, 2024. You will get one free day — the free day will be awarded in the form of 950 HertzGold Plus Rewards points — after the completion of each rental of a minimum of two days  when you book your reservation using promotion code 211511. Please allow 14 business days for the points to be credited to your membership account. Offer may only be applied to three rentals per GPR member. Offer applies at point earning locations only. Free day excludes taxes, fees, and options. Bonus points for free day rental earned through this promotion will expire on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
  • Be on the lookout for even more bonus promotions throughout the year!

Final Boarding Call

I am not sure that the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards membership program can be devalued much more after today, as participating in it is becoming even less worthy of valuable time and effort…

…but to offer a promotion with bonus points that expire in six months is not only not worth getting excited about — it is also insulting. Why would anyone want to be on the lookout for even more bonus points throughout the year with these point expiration policies?

If you have questions about these updates, contact Hertz at 888-999-4900. Better yet, call that telephone number and let them know how you feel about the new point expiration policy…

  1. What is wrong with Hertz. Hertz has been my #1 car rental company since 2000.

When the pandemic started, I should have used up my points but I didn’t. I lost them despite Hertz extending the expiration for others. No huge loss because I nearly always used my points and lost only a 1 day rental.

With this change, I am finally leaving Hertz. Not only did OJ die recently but Hertz is now dead by my measure.

    1. Will you still use Thrifty and Dollar, derek?

Don’t forget that they are part of Hertz as well…

  2. During the pandemic Hertz took nearly 5k in value in rental points away from me due to lack of rentals or due to the bankruptcy.. I do not remember. I am renting from them tomorrow… due to lack of options. I have not rented from them since before the pandemic.

I hope they just go out of business for good.

    1. The problem is that three rental car companies control most of the vehicle rental business in the United States, Sean from Chicago.

Hertz owns Thrifty and Dollar; Avis owns Budget; and Enterprise owns National and Alamo. They are also quite prevalent worldwide. Sixt, Europcar, and other rental car companies are available; but they are usually not better options for a number of reasons.

Rental car companies simply have little incentive to offer anything extraordinary to customers these days, unfortunately…
