After first crossing paths in 1753, Guyasuta and George Washington then spent years on opposing sides in the French & Indian War. In October of 1770, they met over a council fire to revisit the past and discuss the future of this highly-prized region. They are depicted here with an implied equality, as they mirror each other in posture and position. The two were said to have parted on friendly terms.
Guyasuta was an important leader of the indigenous Seneca people who was central in the diplomacy and warfare of the second half of the eighteenth century. Guyasuta accompanied and guided a young George Washington through Pennsylvania to Fort Le Boeuf in 1753.
James A. West created the sculpture, which was dedicated in October of 2006 by Luke Ravenstahl, who was the mayor of Pittsburgh at the time.
