Laptop Computer Left at Security Checkpoint. What Would You Do?

One passenger aboard an airplane was forced to decide.

If you were aboard an airplane and left a laptop computer at the security checkpoint of an airport, what would you do: would you leave the airplane to retrieve it and not be able to get back aboard the airplane for the flight; or would you instead leave the laptop computer behind?

Laptop Computer Left at Security Checkpoint. What Would You Do?

I was seated aboard an airplane yesterday, Thursday, March 19, 2026 when a member of the flight crew announced over the public address system of the airplane that a laptop computer was found at the security checkpoint of the airport — but the passenger who owned that laptop computer had a choice: retrieve the computer but miss the flight; or remain on the airplane and leave the laptop computer behind.

As I did not see anyone leave the airplane after that announcement but prior to the doors closing and the airplane departing, I would have to assume that the person who owned the laptop computer chose to leave it behind.

Final Boarding Call

That situation had me wondering what I would do if I were in that situation. The easy answer is to retrieve the laptop computer and pay to take a later flight — if one was not offered automatically at no extra charge — because both the value of the laptop computer itself and the information stored on it would likely be worth more than the cost of the flight and the time waiting for the next flight…

…but if something important was awaiting me at the destination that was time sensitive and the laptop computer was not all that valuable, I might have to consider remaining aboard the airplane and arrange to have the laptop computer shipped to me.

What would you do if you were in that situation?
