No need to back out of the Outback.

Lasseter Highway in Australia stretches approximately 244 kilometers or 152 miles between Yulara and Stuart Highway at Erldunda at the new locality of Ghan. Also known as Highway A4, the entire stretch of Lasseter Highway — which is named after Lewis Hubert Harold Bell Lasseter — is wholly located within the Northern Territory.

The highway is located in the heart of the Outback. Gone are the numerous towering termite mounds. The red dirt is being overtaken by brushy greenery. The Outback slowly changes over the years.

Lasseter Highway is considered to be a dangerous road for the following reasons:

  • It is straight, as few curves are located on it
  • It is flat for the most part
  • Camels and cattle — as well as other animals — can roam freely on it
  • Hours can go by without seeing greater than a dozen vehicles in total because traffic is so sparse
  • Very few points of interest — such as Mount Conner as one example — punctuate it, as the drive can be quite boring

Moreover, these photographs were taken while the temperature was at least 43 degrees Celsius — which is almost 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Plan to drive three hours between Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park and Kings Canyon; or 5.5 hours between Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park and Alice Springs.

Final Boarding Call

I really like photographs of roads and highways. Lasseter Highway was an opportunity to take photographs of empty stretches of lonely road in the middle of nowhere.
