Sailing on Lake Michigan in Illinois is a popular activity on a cool October afternoon in Chicago when the skies are cloudless, the sun is strong, the wind is nonexistent, and the day is a Sunday.

Both the lake and the sky were quite blue that day as I observed two men piloting a sailboat to join the other watercraft that were already out onto the lake. Perhaps more wind was prevalent out on the lake than on land.

Trivia time: As the only one of the five Great Lakes that is completely located in the United States, Lake Michigan is the second-largest of the Great Lakes by volume and depth after Lake Superior; and the third-largest of the Great Lakes by surface area, after Lake Superior and Lake Huron.
