This is breaking news that may be updated at a later date.

The next president of the United States nominated Sean Duffy to become the new secretary of transportation in the United States, replacing Pete Buttigieg for the role.

Donald J. Trump said that the former representative of the state of Wisconsin would use his experience and relationships built over the years in Congress “to maintain and rebuild our Nation’s Infrastructure, and fulfill our Mission of ushering in The Golden Age of Travel, focusing on Safety, Efficiency, and Innovation. Importantly, he will greatly elevate the Travel Experience for all Americans!”

Duffy is currently the co-host of Bottom Line on the Fox Business channel. He was a special prosecutor and the district attorney for Ashland County before he was elected to become a member of the House of Representatives of the United States in 2010, where he served for nine years. He was a member of the House Financial Services Committee during his tenure in Congress.

Members of the Senate of the United States still must approve his nomination before he can officially become the next secretary of transportation.

Final Boarding Call

I am not sure whether Sean Duffy is fully qualified for the role of secretary of transportation of the United States — but I would not be surprised if he rolled back some of the protections for consumers that were implemented during the tenure of Pete Buttigieg. One example is the new final airline fee transparency rule, which was blocked temporarily by the Fifth United States Circuit Court of Appeals in Louisiana on Monday, July 29, 2024 pending a complete review of the regulation, citing that the rule “likely exceeds DOT’s authority and will irreparably harm airlines”.

My reaction is mixed, as I am against the federal government implementing too much regulation and interfering in the free market — but I also believe that transportation companies should be transparent to consumers in how they conduct business and implement ancillary fees and other pricing schemes…

  1. I would say that many political appointees lack direct experience for their new roles, in every government. I’m not sure that Pete Buttigieg was more qualified when he was appointed.

    1. Buttigieg has always impressed me more than Duffy. Duffy is a dunce compared to Buttigieg. And I know enough about the school records of both and about Duffy’s level of knowledge and thinking on his feet when he was in his 30s and 40s that I can’t see Duffy being more impressive than Buttigieg.

Trump seems to have a continuing thing for reality TV types. This seems

  2. I last ran into him at a dairy parade when he was seeking votes and money yet again from my family. We found his predecessor in Congress — who retired in an assisted living home in Virginia — to be far better for the district area at the time and far better for the airports in the area too. A board member for the airport which became Duffy’s primary airport while in Congress was an acquaintance of mine on Flyertalk. Unfortunately, he is no more.

Duffy never impressed me, and I consider him far less informed about transport matters than Brian of The Gate with Brian Cohen. It probably doesn’t help that I know people with whom he went to school and church occasionally. He’s not a bad guy, but he’s just not impressive. I have to wonder why he got picked.

  3. He got picked for being a Fox News talking head type and Trump kiss-up. [He doesn’t really deserve the credit for securing Wisconsin for Trump in this election.]

    1. Quite profound, don’t you think, Rock?

Actually, that is not what I said — but why let mere facts get in the way?
