Sometimes the most trivial things fascinate me — such as the shielded stop signs in Missouri that I saw recently during a road trip which provide an interesting solution to help prevent accidents in rural areas of the state.

From afar, this stop sign — which is located in a rural area of western Missouri northwest of the small town of Walker — appears to be nothing out of the ordinary when viewing it from the road for which it was intended to control traffic…
…but when viewed from the side, an interesting contraption of four metal plates that were attached to the stop sign helps to obscure the view of the word STOP from the other road at this intersection so as not to confuse motorists who are not required to stop.
Despite the thousands of miles of road trips I have taken over the years, I never saw anything quite like this.

Trivia time: The first stop sign was reportedly created in 1914 by a police sergeant in Detroit named Harold Jackson, who was working as a traffic guard at a busy city intersection.
