What Side of the Sink in a Hotel Room Do You Stage Your Toiletries?

“What side of the hotel sink do you stage your toiletries? Left, right, both, or ‘at home’?” was the question asked by Gizmosdad — who is a reader of The Gate — in response to this article in which I asked which bed you choose if you are a solo traveler in a hotel room with two beds.

What Side of the Sink in a Hotel Room Do You Stage Your Toiletries?

My initial response to that interesting question — about which I never gave a thought — was “I stage my toiletries on the side of the sink with the most room or with the least chance of getting wet” and that “I have thought about it; but I cannot say that I actually have a preference as to which side — perhaps the left side?!? I suppose how the bathroom is configured also affects my decision…”

Summary

After thinking about it, I then realized that I stage my toiletries on the side of the sink which is farthest away from the toilet. I am not sure why, as I do not recall ever having accidentally dropped any toiletries in a toilet in a hotel bathroom. Most room and least chance of getting wet are still factors, though; so there is no absolutely staunch personal rule which I follow.

Whenever I am at home, my toiletries are kept in a cabinet under the vanity in my bathroom; so that does not apply to stays in hotel rooms.

Thanks to Gizmosdad, I am now curious as to which side of the sink in the bathroom of a hotel room you stage your toiletries — as well as what are your reasons for doing so. Does your criteria change when you are traveling with someone versus traveling alone? Please post your thoughts in the Comments section below.

  1. Totally “in sink” (hah!) with your decision about “not getting wet”. My stuff gets splayed on the opposite side from the “sink-to-hand towel path”. Ther will be no drippy hands overpassing my toothbrush.

  2. Agreed. I put my dopp kit (with pills etc.) on the dry side where there are no towels and often the wall with electrical outlet. My kippy bag (with lens solutions & liquids) goes on the other side and I move the soap dish to that side, if needed.

Really hate hotels where there is no place to put stuff, like the ones with those fancy bowl wash basins

    1. I do not get the fancy bowl wash basins, boraxo

…and because I do not carry any items which I need to plug into an outlet in the bathroom when I travel, I actually had not thought of that as a factor of where to place my toiletries.

  3. Closest to an electrical outlet cos my dryer, phone, & other electrical devices are plugged in there there already. Is then also furthest from moisture.

  4. When traveling alone, I always go with the most spacious, and hence, drier side. When traveling with my wife, we always revert to the sides we have at home (even though we have double sinks). Thus, I am left and she is right. (She’d say she’s right all the time!)
