Te Anau in New Zealand

This town is an ideal place to stay overnight when traveling between Queenstown and Milford Sound.

The drive between Queenstown and Milford Sound can consume almost four hours to drive fewer than 300 kilometers. Going to Milford Sound for the day from Queenstown is not impossible to do; but it can be quite a long day. Te Anau in New Zealand is a quaint town which is a popular place to stop for the night along the way.

Te Anau is a town which is located on the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau in Fiordland in the Southland region of the South Island of New Zealand.

Translated into English from Māori, Te-Anau means the Place of the Swirling Waters.

Many cottages and motels line Lakefront Drive, which also winds its way along the lake.

Final Boarding Call

You can find many places to stay overnight in Te Anau — but forget about earning miles or points for the most part. Most of the lodging options are operated as independently owned small businesses.

Although many dining options are available in Te Anau, few are actually decent to consider. I highly recommend dining at The Olive Tree Cafe.

Te Anau can be accessed by either State Highway 94 or State Highway 95. Te Anau Airport serves flights from Christchurch. Other than by bus or motor vehicle, no other way is available to access Te Anau.
