The Cost of Flying to the South Pole is…

...much more expensive in 2025 than it was in 2014.

One of my top travel goals is to spend at least one night at the South Pole in Antarctica. I would like to be able to be at the southernmost point on our wonderful planet, which is one of only two spots on earth where you can be in almost every time zone all at once; as well as walk around in a circle and keep heading either east or west. It is also the only place on Earth where no matter which way you look or point, the direction is always north.

The Cost of Flying to the South Pole is…

Every so often, I like to check on how much it costs to go to the South Pole. To fly as a passenger on an airplane from Punta Arenas in Chile to the South Pole with either PolarQuest or PolarExplorers, the cost starts at $64,800.00 — which has increased from $45,800.00 in 2014 — and that does not include travel to or from Punta Arenas…

…and with Adventure Travel International, the cost for the trip for next season is between $66.750.00 and $98,800.00, which has increased from $47,200.00 in 2014.

If you would rather ski to the South Pole instead of fly, plan on taking anywhere from 12 to 59 days to ski and cost you anywhere between $81,113.00 and $91,928.00 with Icetrek, which has increased from between $58,900.00 and $86,500.00 in 2014.

Summer is approaching in Antarctica. As I write this, the temperature there is 31 degrees — below zero, that is — and at that temperature, Fahrenheit and Celsius are almost the same. The average high temperature in January is almost a balmy 21 degrees below zero Fahrenheit — not including the wind chill, where the wind speed can reach hurricane strength — perfect for lounging around outside in your bathing suit whilst sipping on an iced tea.

I prefer lemonade, personally — but I digress.

Final Boarding Call

One way to go to the South Pole and get paid to do so is if you are qualified, healthy, and willing to stay for a minimum of four months, the United States Antarctic Program has opportunities in the form of jobs not only at the South Pole, but also at other areas in Antarctica…

…and I confess to having applied to the program more than once. Yes, that is how much I would like to go to the South Pole.

Someday…I will get there someday — and in fact, I am announcing this for the first time: I am currently on my way to Antarctica as this article was published today, Sunday, November 30, 2025…

…but in the meantime, have you been to the South Pole? If so, was it worth the trip? Would you recommend it?

  1. Finally I’ve been somewhere the bloggers haven’t been! Don’t forget it’s sunny all day… or is it night….. Let’s just go with 24hours so wear sun screen!

  2. Personally I would fly from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia and then take a cruise to Antarctica. It is a lot cheaper, more fun and more comfortable than flying. The last I looked it cost something like $ 13,000 to $ 24,000 depending on the cruise line, the itinerary, number of days of travel and number of cities visited along the way. Two of my friends went on this trip. The said that the views were breathtaking. Even photographs taken cannot accurately portray the beauty of Antarctica. I am told it is the trip of a lifetime. One of these days. Like you, this is one place I would love to visit.

    1. I just completed a cruise to Antarctica, Shaul.

Please allow me to verify that everything you wrote was true.

A series of articles pertaining to my trip to Antarctica is forthcoming…

  3. I wish I could do this trip (one of the kosher cruises) with my wife. With G-d’s help may we be able to afford this some day. The 4 month stint looks tempting although I don’t think it will be easy to get a Minyan there so I think I’ll hold off on applying!
